Believe me, trial accounts can put in signatures, and I didnt try it, but I also thing they can put in an avatar. The signatures i know for sure, as i did it a couple of times lately

I seem to remember only noticing the private messages link at the top once i had activated private messages.

I conclude with "If you dont have private messages activated (via control panel) then dont expect to see the private messages link at the top

No, you can edit your avatar and sig on a trial account if you want to.
