Ryzom is supposed to happen all within around 8 years of gameplay.. technically if you look at it right - the story IS developing.. politics ARE a huge deal in the game.. bieng personally close to one of the guildleaders in game - i know that bieng GL makes for a rough Political system... its a MMORPG, we are the players, and we control what happens in game. Nevrax just throws an event at us once in a while and we take it the way we do..
And here in is part of the issue. If you look at it just right, 5 degrees west, 8 degrees north you might just catch a glimpse of truth somewhere... do you see the problem in this logic?

If I said to you I have a headache. I look as though I have a headache and you might say: Fine, you have a headache, take some advil.

If I said to you I see snakes all over the floor. I am visablly shaken by this and by this reaction you might say: Get a hold of yourself man, you've gone mad!

So, was I crazy when I said I had a headache or with the snakes or both? How do you know?

As in the case with most things, it is hard to judge what is going on in other persons heads.

Politicks aren't that big of a deal in this game. Especially when compared to some other games like EQ, Eve, and ATITD where politicks is a major part of the game. You aren't really controlling anything, frankly. I could be wrong on this, but besides the infinity debacle, I don't think anything major in this game has happened in the past six months (as far back as I have read in the forums). By major, I mean a serious shift in power. More to my own point it took one of the largest and most powerful guilds in ryzom to do something totally unexpected and unplanned for that to happen.

In Eve some corps are over 400 members - active. In EQ the guild I was an officer in had in excess around 120 or more and about 70 could be expected to log in on a raid night. I'd rather not tit for tat, I'm mearly using this illustrate an earlier example.

Moving right along I think it is great certain people are into RP. I'm not. Any game should be robust enough to be playable by a multitude of players. I am me and I am a real person and I play the exact same person I might play as if you saw me on the street. Games are a partial mental exercise and social release for me. For others, they are different. What makes MMORPG's different then a doom map is they must be broad enough in scope to appeal to many people for them to be interesting.

anybody that says there is no real story to Ryzom is looking in all the wrong places. Ryzom to me is just like my life - i know one day i'll grow up and finish Uni, then hopefully become a very successful Game Developer Person - and all that.. i DONT expect it to all happen RIGHT NOW.
I assume you are rationalizing your own game play because I have not said that Ryzom is lacking in storyline. It has lots of story and lore.

I've also never stated I want everything "right now". Though, I am not going to slam my head up against a wall for 6 months waiting for something to happen either. Now, I gave Ryzom a chance - even after having read back in the forums and having been a part of Beta which was a poor experience. I am an extremelly patient player.

There IS a story to Ryzom, and it IS in the game. many people consider these things 'annoying' but they forget, that war isn't supposed to be 'fun.' - Glory isnt achieved without hardship.
I am not sure why you are pleading with me. Yes, there are certain things within the game. Yes, there are a few yubo's. I'm not sure what your point is. I dare say, I know a few things about war being a RL vet and all.
Proud Player of Ryzom, and HERE TO STAY
I hope you and many other people do stay. I am not trying to convince anyone to leave, my only goal is to provoke discusion and hopefully some real fundemental changes to the game. I, however, will not be staying. I can not slam my head up side my foraging pick so I can only be rewarded by slamming my head up side my crafting tool.

Player created content in an online world is a non-competitive business model and I am surprised the VC’s didn’t stomp this. What Ryzom is aiming for is player driven content and that is an entirely different beast. There is a little of this in Ryzom, but the real player driven content can be found in Eve.
It's not about the content, it's about the fun you can get from making and playing scenarios in ring. :)

not correct, it was said that there is enough story-line material and planned development points to keep the devs busy for AT LEAST 8 years.
this was misinterpreted into a planned run-time of 8 years.

If that is RP, then am I RPing a little gamepiece when I play Monopoly? Or a little checkerpiece when I play checkers? Or, hell, the cursor/keyboard when I use a computer?

Roleplaying takes imagination. It takes no imagination to be a person in front of a computer playing a game that happens to have an avatar/character as the focal point.
You misunderstand. I'm a roleplayer. I just don't make it more than it is.

I agree to a certain degree, Etrusan. There is no economy to talk of. I was surprised to get excellent equipment on my first day a few months ago, it would never happened in WoW ("Give me 1 gold plz"). Crafters tend to overcraft and are filthy rich, still I can't find High quality Matis Medium Armor of the QL and color I want at the merchants.

The spires are still coming? Can't get more political than that. We'll get a game of "Risk" layered on top of the rest of the Ryzom. I am intrigued and a bit scared of what will happen when the big guilds go berserk. That will be interesting times.

I'm a roleplayer.
Based on your definition, by my definition no you are not. But, my definition is a rather strict one.

There's just too much variety to have everything homins might want on the merchants all the time.
Medium armor? Place and order from the shop and you can get anything you want ;)
