The whole thing hangs together in a believable fashion adding in all the elements backstory etc, then as per Rushins comment you mix in the community and bingo you get addicted.

Sometimes we all get a little burned from grinding if we make that mistake but there is simply nothing out there atm that offers the complete "World" feel of SoR.

At first it was a break of the world surrounding me, a break from the life I was in for a while and with new found freedom play all the games I wanted. Startup and discovery was what kept me coming back, as well the possibility to chat to people and team up with real people who are not predictable like AI. Initial phase, lasted a few weeks.

After a while it evolved into something more addictive, the idea that Atys would not run as nicely as it could without my presence. Sacrifacing sleep and hurting work and other things. Why? Compulsive probably. Junkie phase, lasted almost a year.

I grew sick of things, everything in game annoyed me without realizing it was my life that was annoying me so much. Had troubles escaping the game but wanted so badly to go out and do something different but looking at my screen. When I went out I got easily bored and kept having thoughts like: "When I come home, I can dig a bag of resin... 4 hours of sleep is okee, right?" Nasty to think like that. Also made loads of nasty posts and comment in every medium possible. The Crumbling phase.

Wanted something different, so played WoW. Good choice to switch, that game is so much everything SoR is not, the good and bad things will stand out more for both worlds. Also it made pointed out Atys is a world and I am only one homin on it. The Revelations phase.

So when I came back to Atys I didnt wanted any greetings, didnt want to be cheered upon and most of all, wanted to greet the world, Atys, most of all. So I dropped my guild and went to sit in the Flaming Forest for a while and all the fun that comes with this sort of RP, which was a way to enter a world again with a fresh view. The Clensing phase.

Overall: What Rushin said but more chaotic ;-)

The beta. I somehow knew when in beta that I was definately going to be here a while. It grabbed me by the throats and pulled me in. The world amazed me and the people took me in.

I stay now because I can't imagine not seeing my guild and my friends. They make the world for me. They keep me addicted to this world and this game.

I was on a webpage with all kind of games and I was pretty much bored with the games I had at that point so decided to download the load of them.
One of them was Ryzom OB2, darn only a few days left in the OB :/
I was adicted on sight and didn't know what to do when OB2 ended.
When I finaly had the game I met some great people and couldn't stay away from Ryzom anymore :)
I don't realy think I ever could have been seen as an casual player! ^_^

i blame OB1 cyros and sin (guildies from desert ghosts)
it all started when the ryzom beta client was on the disc of a PC mag i got, and while flicking through it i was the advert for it and decided 2 give it a go and from that day on the longest break ive had from ryzom was my hols in cyprus.
since then ive stayed becos of the laughs i hav with mates ingame.

What has kept me here is:

> involved and challenging crafting system
> variety of activities to pursue as opposed to games which limit roles and become repetitive and boring
> wonderful community

What is making me leave is:

> failure of Nevrax to include non-pvp-ers in new content
> failure to balance to game for pve - jug spells hit for full damage regardless of jewels, AoD cant defend self when digging in pr, self-heal + invul 6 isnt enuf to outrun aggro - what is the point of maxing skills if they dont permit one to defend oneself against a single target when digging??
> regularly ganked by devs when digging - worse now than with kps in pr, players would be sanctioned for aggro dragging the devs do every 3-5 minutes
> placing lore b4 fun and friendship, eg no healing in team in gvg, kt which precludes taking low diggers to help them level and digging with friends if only enuf kt for one to get mats
> region chat no longer reflects the broad sense of community that once existed - it reflects the imaginary conflict Nevrax has manufactured
> game just isnt fun any more, and many of my friends have already quit for these and similar reasons which also disinclines me to stay and be ganked and marginalised as one of the newly created class of op have nots.

Zysha

Seems like the game has either hardcores, newbies or a few very casual types like me. It's obvious why you lot of hardcore types hang around, that's the case in any game. It's obvious that there will be always a bunch of new players too, at least while SoR stays in MMORPGs top ten etc. The real interesting question is why on earth am I still here as a light casual player?
