However Blaah he is quite correct. Tracking is inconsistent.

Actually you are better using 5 or 10m prospect because I can't seem to find them as often with the 50m. Maybe the 40m is a special one. I don't seem to have that one.

complex (or very simple ?) source placement in server makes it inconsistent.
server seems to contain single mat type/grade sources (x,y with 0 deviation) , not the area it can be poped (x,y with 0.5m deviation)... or the deviation is too small.
only Nevrax knows how accurate your random should be to pop source.

also, if you try 10 sources, then you still get 1 "error message" which adds more confusion sometimes (one lands to empty spot, then you may get "no materials here" message).

btw, range goes 5/10/20/40/60/80/100m. 40m is "range 4"

In my opinion tracking works very well, but it took me some time to understand what it really does.

I encourage everyone to read Frydeswindes Tracking explained at the Ryzom Wiki, and while reading it keep in mind that you track Nodes not Spots or Sources, and that if you tracked a node sucessfully, remember from which direction you entered the node originally, and prospect in the original movement direction for the mats you seek.
