I'm thinking of getting Saga of ryzom. Have the trial on download right now. But.. As always.. A trial period is never enough to get to know the game.
I have played EQ(very briefly), Anarchy online(for a couple of months) and WoW(since the second American Beta release).
I loved AO, even though I found the crafting hard to get into. Sadly RL messed up my gametime, so I quit playing. I fell in love with WoW from the start, easy going and it is Warcraft

But it's too easy going, the community isnt very friendly anymore and as for PvP... It's a free-for-all gankfest. As long as its a sure and easy kill, kill it. If its a even fight, get four of your friends and kill it.
Sooo, what I am wondering is..
1. Is this game "alive"? I meen, is people leaving in masses or is the community growing?
2. Is the community friendly? Or rather, newbie friendly? Will I get the help I need or will I get bashed for asking newbie questions?
3. Is the fighting system and crafting system any good? Or are they mindboggeling complex or laughable easy? Or perhaps somewhere in between?
4. How is the Role playing? Does the RPers get bashed by leetkiddies and called nerds and the likes?
5. Is the game any fun? Or does it get repetetive?
I prolly got many more questions but I can't think of them right now.
Anyways.. I will see you all in game! For atleast 7 days
/Cheers
1.It's not totally deserted, but you'll always find someone to talk to or group with.
2. Ryzom has the most friendly mmo community on the face of this planet.I have never seen anyone bash a noo8, and on the contrary, i asked and answer n008 questions all the time. I like doing it
3. Fighting is easy, it's just the stanzas that take a little time to get used to. And to craft, bewarned, if your a crafter, around here your a harvester to. Crafting involves getting what you need by digging, then making the product. so if you want to craft, better get used to digging a lot
4. RolePlaying is prevalent in Ryzom, I haven't seen much of it except at events and some capital cities. I respect the roleplayers (as Im sure a lot of people do) and iv even joined it once in a while. fun stuff
5. It's Fun..... And repetitive. It all depends on what you do.
Anyways have fun in game. Ryzom is the most original game

I started playing just a few days ago myself, thought another "noobs" experience so far might be helpful.
1. I have no clue, it is pretty empty compared to other games. But except for the newbie island there have always been "enough" people around to keep things interesting.
2. It is the most newbie friendly community i have ever encountered. I have gotten lots of help from lots of different people. Noone has ever been unfriendly to me at all. People i never met before have offered to help me find good spots/cities etc just to be nice.
3. The system seems to be pretty interesting. I havent had time to play around all that much with it yet though.
4. RP seems to be a little more accepted here then in other games i tried (EVE, WoW, Atitd). Its not that everyone roleplays, but people dont seem to complain if you do.
5. I think the game can be very repetetive if you let it. But its really up to you. If you solo a lot and try to gain levels in a single skill it will become very boring fast (in my opinion). But if you gang up with some more experienced people and help them with whatever you will not only have much more fun; you will also gain XP a lot faster. Basically from what i have seen so far grouping is the major thing in making this game worthwhile. I have had lots of fun following high level people around into areas that are way above my level.
Anyway, just stay on newbie island long enough to get a feel for the basics. Kill a few suckling yobus, try to craft one or two pieces of armor. But as soon as you get bored out there leave for the city and try to get to know people. See if someone will show you good spots for foraging/hunting. I also recommend doing some exploring with people that know their way around the place. This world is really special and its well worth spending hours and hours just running around looking at things.
edit:
Oh, and you will see lots of threads complaining about "episode 2" in these forums. Dont take that stuff to seriously. I suck at most things in this game but still spent several hours in the hot zone yesterday and had fun while gaining 7 levels in one go.

For question number 1: Theres lot of talk in board about leaving, but havent seen too many friends to leave yet.
In opposite i've seen many "lost" faces recently (old players that have taken a bit of time afk), and never seen so many new ones around Fyros and Zorai starting areas. If they stay in game after trial period, player population will surely grow.

Wow... we agree on something
Even the
guild that talked so much about everyone leaving is acting like it was a lie in the
"guild" forums. Best I can tell ONE person left, and many talk about it. Melinoe as well has seen some faces we haven't seen in weeks. Though you are my enemy I am glad to see your ranks increase because many have been waiting for this stuff (even if it is not perfect).
SoR is what you make of it and this new player is asking the right questions and should find himself a good place to rest his blade...

It is so nice when people run out of arguments and start attacking the arguer instead.
In my absolutely not humble opinion: If Evolution is attacked by the likes of your ilk, DoubleTap, then we're doing things right.

If you want to get attention by telling lies about leaving the game... expect to be called on it. When your gone, then your statement is made...

Doubletap,
none of Evolution has lied about their intentions to leave or their thinking to leave SoR.
In fact, Scarazi, one of those listed under 'thinking about leaving', has now left.
If you had asked me about my thinking, I'd have given you this answer:
I've decided to give SoR/Nevrax until the end of the calendar year, if they by then have failed to provide some meaningful content alternative for nonPvP'ers, I'll leave. In other words, I'm thinking about leaving, but willing to wait and see what happens.
Only you didn't ask. You assumed and as some old sergeant told me when you assume, you make an ASS out of U and ME.

Hmm, with
this news coming out, I'm even more certain to leave. You all, you can enjoy my vociferous and garrulous company until the end of the year, then I'm afraid I'll say my good-byes.

His subscription is not run out yet, but it will not be renewed. He has announced his leaving on our Guild site.
This is also why he has closed his ql250 weapons shop.
