But it imposes no sanctions on gankers, unless I missed that bit, and while it would be nice for non-PvP players to get a shot at supreme Zun every once in awhile, it is still segregation, albiet a slightly more fair version.
Well, in line with a "story" and assuming we have these nuetral switches, it could all be worked in. I mean if I choose faction warfare and I go in and start harvesting in a then current faction war zone, I deserve to get smashed. However if I am "neutral", then killing neuties should result in a honor penalty. Not so much that it never happens as ya know non combatants should not be walking into known warzones.
As for the segregation.....IRL...and I assume in any story, non combatants evacuate hostile areas. Huricane comin...okay lets leave and come back tomorrow......riots, incursions, etc civilians should be thinking of evacuating.....the key being acess to all areas will be the norm rather than the exception. Any one area will be "hot" for only a small percentage of time.

Historically true, but they move as either side gains the upper hand. Looking at the Matis / Fyris border for example. The "front" might wander from Hidden Source to Knoll of Decent to Savage Dunes.
However, Vietnam, Iraq, American Revolution, etc.....where is / was the front line ? Wars with fronts are major, relative short....faction wars are more gurellia based wars which betetr fits the story line I think.

I wasn't saying they were static just that the fighting was localised. And if you insist on realism...
War tend to end...

The hunderd years war lasted a hunderd year, after that......it ended. The conflict in the middle east hasn't been an all out war for 5,000 years...

As it's extremely likely you and I will end our subscriptions long before the year 2105, I'm not sure why this would have relevance. And might not episode 3 or 4 require that all homins unite to defend against an outer threat ?

Hasn't been "all out", but there has been no significant period of non hostility. Activity has ranged from minor skirmishings during periods of otherwise "peace" to all out war....kinda like the event based system in Ryzom. Will guild or faction wars last from now till we end our subscriptions, every day, every minute ? Unless we are going to be locked up every minute of game time staying close to and defending our outposts or ancestral lands, I have to think the analogy holds,
