One week in and I've made some blunders in character development.

How do you use root and fear, they seem very... unreliable to me.

See "mage soloing tactic" in the mage guide forum for fear. With roots it's basically the same, exept that you have only enought time for 1 nuk instead of two and must run away from the target now and then.

From my upcoming newbie guide...

Very simple way to think about it:

3 fight start packs = 40 'free' SPs
3 magic start packs = 205 'free' SPs
3 foraging start packs = 150 'free' SPs
3 craft start packs = 105 'free' SPs

What you end up choosing clearly depends on your character, but its pretty clear that whatever you do fight packs are just not worth it even if you want to be a pure melee fighter.

As for the Crafting pack, you are bound to include the free Generic Materials in the free SP pool. I would say that 200 Generic Materials would be equal to at least 10 levels in craft = 100 extra SP.

You can make it to lvl 14-15 with those.

But I wouldn't include them in the "free" lvls. If you choose 3 magic packs, for example, you can advance to lvl 20 far faster than one who bought the magic start could. Just as you can advance to lvl 20 faster with 3 crafting packs....

Well, lets do some math.

200 ql 10 materials = 200*130 dappers per wondermat = 26000 dappers.

If I could permanently buy 50 or 100 skill points for 26000 dappers - which it will take you maybe an hour or so to make running basic missions - I'd do that trade everytime.

That said, the crafting pack isn't nearly as bad as the fight packs, and given how precious craft points are probably should be a premium assigned.
