Everyone should be able to start using range weapons from the first day in the game.
Issue: Players don't use range weapons in normal dayly fighting. Why?
I dont see any difference between the weapon/amp/armour market and the ammo market.
You are able to use ranged from the first day on.
There are players who use it. Not many but there are. It is that most players choose to level first the skill with the most power.
But i know what you mean

All i can say is, that DEVs said that they will look into ranged fighting.

My contribution to this argument remains the same it always has been
Double the damage and it works fine.

Weight of ammo/bulk:
Weight per shot of ammo is low for pistol and rifle (launchers and auto launchers are 'toys' and are best used for leveling after 151+ as rifles are more effective leveling weapons)
SOON (tm) weight will not be an issue as weight is being removed as a factor in relation to your bag.
I can carry 999 shots (1 stack) at a push.
You also might find the use of a Homin packer (*pokes Neun for using Kyerna and me last weekend

*). If the teammate is going to lvl magic or melee, they have loads of free space in their bag that I'm sure they would share with you.

2. The team way
Join a team range friendly, that are fight mobs you can hit quickly and once you hit stop shooting and wait for the XP to roll in. If you feel like a leach, give something back to the team by healing between pulls etc.
'Range friendly team' is a bit like an 'Affliction friendly teams', a team who allow all the members to hit before killing the mob.
Or convince one of your friends to come and help you have fun

.

5. RUN AROUND NOW!
I love this method but it requires a healer or a stack of HPs.
Shoot a ragus and run away, or in circles. I love the way I still get hit by them when they are 10m+ away but such is the way of the game.
Cutes are also good range bait - but watch for adds!
Honestly... it's much more fun to watch Neun run around with a Cute running behind... and then all of a sudden watch Neun go "Ahh..." and having to rezz him

because he got one or two adds.

For pistols and rifles:
- The damage is much lower than when using a melee weapon
- The stamina drain is much higher than when using a melee weapon
- The upkeep cost is much higher than when using a melee weapon, both because of the mats the ammo costs and because of the much faster wear of equipment.
- You have to pick up new ammo every hunt whereas with a melee weapon you only need the weapon.
For launchers and autolaunchers:
- Burning insane amounts of mats for every bullet fired makes grinding very expensive.
- AoE damage which can't be turned off makes grinding very dangerous.
- Having to run back for ammo every few kills makes grinding very slow.
Did I miss anything?

One of the complaints about Melee is its stand on a spawn, pull a mob, kill it (press stanza and wait), repeat till comatose. (Read boring)
With range it requires effort.
Plan ahead (ammo for mob type)
Stock up (Homin packers, or real packers)
or
Hunt near a harvest spot, if your an ammo crafter! DFP fount is perfect for lvl 80-120 range (solo)
You can run around like a yber without a head while shooting
I have a gut feeling that not enough players have done enough with range to see if it actually works as is.
I remeber the complaints about the cost of magic skills (50sp thats way too much!!!!) but I know many magic users who now have 100's of spare skill points and nothing to buy.
I remember the complaints about magic cast times (2 sec cast times OMG it will never work!) with 97%+ amps elem is the highway to high level.
We really need Cry's objective input into this as he has gone through the pain of actually doing it.

You should not distract from the latest adventures with the ladies
Crythos still uses ranged i think. Somehow it must be worth it if you are willing to put in what is needed. No problem for me, that was the way i learned the game. A tweak is only needed if we want ranged to become more popular.

Waves finger at the point in previous post that said 'Range friendly team'!
When you have to try and shoot a mob 70 lvls above you skill level and get a hit in before it dies in 2 casts, you have to take a few more risks the usual (Note: anyone who has hunted with me will know that for me to take a few more risks requires alot of effort!)
I was still getting XP 2 in 3 pulls, however dying and needing a rez after every 2nd pull kind of slowed things down a little. *giggles*
Gave up in the end and went 'healer bot mode'.
(Note it was a red wine night and 11:50 pm, I was not on top form, but had a load of fun, thx hun

Ranged has been my main skill from the word go. You have to put abit more effort in than other trees because you deal less damage (agree with Jyudas, all ranged need to balance is abit more damage), also to try and compensate for poor damage you have to use all the bricks you can for rapid fire, acc attack etc which makes you use stam like a dam bursting.
Using a rifle i carry about 1600 rounds when i go out on a guild hunt, this is enough for several hours of mayhem so running out of ammo not normally a problem unless i am caught out on short notice.
If you are at all serious about ranged, crafting your own ammo is really the only way to go otherwise it will be expensive if you can find ammo at all, the npc ammo is just about useless. I only somtimes put ammo degrades on the vendors cos i burn up all i craft anyway and for selfish reasons i wouldnt want anyone in a gladiator comp throwing my own ammo back at me

My role in teaming seems to have evolved into additional damage, secondary tank and puller of adds and backup emergency healer.
I enjoy rangefight very much because with ammo crafting etc the gameplay is quite diverse and rewarding with regard to balance, if the desire for PvP and or uberness is your thing then dont bother cos my guestimates is you are 20/25 lvls below a Mage and 10/20 lvls behind melee.
And yes Devs remember rangefight we are still here and can I have a Tryker waving Rifle please (not sure how accurate it would be)

Yep, he does, currently blasting Najabs (semi-solo, has a healer/homin packer) in Loria (you know the place, lvl 250 region that you need a huge team to walk thro

)
**Edit** yey talk of the devil - thx Cry!
