Well I played a new character last week and got to lvl 30 melee in 4 days on the island, only playing a few hours an evening... Most of the people I was on the island with had decided on their own to try and get all/most trees to lvl 30 before going

I got to 38 melee during the rebirth event that one weekend, but it was truly an exercise in tedium. Having the knowledge I do now made it a lot easier and quicker, but I can't imagine someone doing it for all four trees! My very first trial account I went a whole week there playing all day and didn't even hit 20 in anything.
I just dont' see a reason to continue past 20, if the player understand how things work. Going just that high can take a long time for a new palyer. Accepting the diminshed XP returns is pointless if it's just to hit a number before moving to where more people are. Some of the islands can be practically deserted, and I'd hate to see the loneliness turn people off.

I'd agree trying to get crafting/harvesting that high would be silly, but I don't see any reason to leave before lvl 25 in melee or ele tbh. I guess thats just me tho
To darthg: Like I said, there's plenty of low level stuff on the mainlands that you can have a go at right from level one, but there you'll be restricted to the areas around the capitals if you're trying to solo to learn stuff. On the islands you have a nice big area to play around in

Spriteh, I think I read in the Rebirth thread that you know someone that was lvl 80 on the island, do you know what it was in?
I'm trying to imagine even lvl50, the lvl 20 mobs or mats can't be be giving more than like 5 or 10xp at that point. Lvl 80 seems impossible. I'm not sure at what lvl difference it drops to 0xp, but that has to be awful close.

LoL, can't even say what skill?
I was under the impression that there aren't even mission mats over Q20.
And the kipee, best fight XP on the island, were down to about 200 XP solo and dropping fast past lvl 35.
At least say if they leveled on millions of 10XP actions or it's a secret that something on the island is higher level
Edit: Just had one thought: buying Q50 vendor mats and leveling craft.
But that's a lot of money

Hello and Welcome Darthg!
If you haven't already, be sure to check out the fairly recent game basics section here (I could have used that when I started
).
http://www.ryzom.com/?page=game_basics
I saw 8 players on the Tryker starter island at one time when I was there last week. Your timezone is probably less populated though. Find everyone around using the /who command. If they don't respond to the region chat, I suggest giving them individual messages, /tell {name} or right-click 'talk' on them, since people often are not looking at the region or around chat. Windows can get covered up by other windows. New players are probably less talkative as well. Once you find some friends, add them to your contact list and check it so that you can locate them even if they are in a different region. I left the starter island around level 15 fight. Getting advice, better equipment and teaming with experienced players all added up to a much better experience for me on the mainland.

The starter islands are closed to anyone who isn't starting there
You can't go back once you leave and you can only go to the one of your race

That I can tell you (didn't spent all those days and DP figuring out the exp equation for nothing); the exp drops to 0 for creatures 50 levels below you.
And with thanks to Berrule: the craft exp drops to 0 for crafting items 25 levels below you, and the forage exp for foraging mats about 40 levels below you. So it's impossible to reach level 80 with only level 20 creatures and mats at your disposal.
