Re: Has anyone from nevrax or jolt answered why we cant alter the zoom out?

Im just curious, because one of my pet hates is not being able to zoom out further, and since there is a change we can make that allows it, why does this cause a problem doing it?

I havent made the alteration (which i wont describe for obvious reasons), but i find it very frustrating knowing i could, but if i did i would loose all support from the CSR or jolt.

Anyone know why this is such a problem?
Since nobody answered this directly, I'll have a go at it. Basically, there are things in the config that can cause various problems if modified incorrectly. Some of these things can create hard-to-detect issues. Tracking down this type of self-created issue can be quite a drain on support resources and can cause incorrect perceptions of game and personnel.

"But it's just a small change to the camera distance, you're blowing things way outta proportion here." I can hear someone sayin it.. I would agree with this if that config was the only line in the file, but it's not and saying "it's ok to change this, but nothing else" is not at all feasible.

Also, as an example of a very hard to spot issue, imagine if someone opened the configuration file in text editor that saved the data in a form other than plain text. They just caused the game to not be able to load anymore, due to the file format being incorrect. They realize that it had something to do with the zoom change, so they change the value back (using the same editor). Game doesn't load, so it must be something else that's broke, right? Maybe that patch that was released the day before? The chances of spotting the reason behind this kinda failure are slim, and the average user would swear they didn't change anything (because they changed the value back to default). The end perception of the game, and the support folks that could not give a reason for the failure, would suffer.

Anyway, yeah that...

I encourage people to do that thing cause then you can take pretty pictures.
However, I would never do such a thing! I would lose support then!

I would never again be able to hear, "Sorry, we can't disclose that information." or, "Try logging." or, "Try reinstalling Ryzom."

@sui
this may be true but the default of the config is kept in teh same directory, and the default file is checked at program load and restored if changed

so if they f* things up anyone can easily restore the file, of course why would someone who cant restore a file like that be editing a config file, lol
frankly the only reason you would want to zoom out like that is to take pictures, its not that helpful for much else.

LOL! (sorry couldn't resist :) )

I like that page, although a word of warning: If anyone is sensitive about WW2 human rights issues (I mean genuinely sensitive), don't look half-way down the page on the left. Although I'm not sensitive about it, it did make me cringe a bit :)

words to the OP, if you do decide to do "that thing", all you gotta do is making a copy of "that thing" before hand, but make sure you do that. Copy it to "that thing".bak.

@dazman
when i set negative values and zoom past a certain point that is located exactly inside the head of my char there is a 20% chance of my client freezing, thus my assumption of soemthing with zero, esp. since i have to set negative values to be able to do that
p.s.: just saw you wrote position, while i was talking about zoom value, perhaps that's why our observations differ :)

but that would be bad because if you can zoom forward then you can see through walls, and you could get a headshot through some of those boxes or a door maybe

oh wait wrong game it doesnt matter in ryzom

wrong, you can see them on your 250m radar already,

if you zoom in or out 250m it takes you a couple minutes to return to a playable position -> its ineffective
plus wiht that 20% chance of crash thats being mentioned its obviously a bad idea to begin with as it would take you out of the acton for 10 minutes while you relog

plus if you stand on a hill you can see them from far away anyways, except for that 200m max
