There is no "wrong" choice, but the harvest/craft/magic is more efficient because melee is the easiest to start without a starting pack.
This is probably food for a new thread, but how does grouping work for someone who's new like myself and others that are much farther along?
The problem is experience vs risk/challenge. If you fight a mob at your level, but are teamed with a lvl 100 healer (for example), neither of you will get much xp, if any. If you try to fight a mob at the higher level, you'll die. Or it'll take so long it won't be worth it. Most likely, you'll just die.

Generally, it's more efficient to hook up with folks if roughly the same level ability you are planning to use. (give or take about 20 levels.)

When I was first starting out, I was often invited into higher level groups by my guildmates and it generally worked OK as long as:

1. If you're healing, make sure they don't *need* you. i.e. if you are the only healer, you're going to have a hard time keeping up. But, if you are an additional healer in a group, it should be ok.

2. If you're fighting or nuking, try not to go too high a level or you won't connect with the mobs. Get to know the regions and what levels/colors they contain. Blue=1-50, Yellow=51-100, etc. If you're under level 50 and try to join a group in the red zone (151-200), you're gonna have a hard time hitting anything. If you hit once, you get a full share of the xp. If you don't hit, you don't.

3. They were already getting the maximum xp allowed (3000) and my presence didn't cause that to drop.

Some high level groups won't take a lower level player because it'll reduce the experience everyone gets (experience is based on levels and number of players in the group, divided evenly). I usually only joined a higher level group when my guild invited me too. I didn't ask non-guild groups because I didn't want to impose if I couldn't help.

For now, I'd suggest you start with the Region chat and just tell people you are looking for a hunt group and tell them what skill/level you want to work. Some days you'll find someone; some days you won't. Whenever I can't find someone to hunt with, I take it as a sign that it's a good day to dig. Try to work a variety of different skills to avoid burnout on any one thing.

Lots of good advice! From the sound of things it seems I should really start thinking about finding a guild once I have the basic mechanics down. I'll be honest - I'm just doing the free trial for the time being and I'll see how I feel about SoR in 2 weeks :)

I have a real history of getting obsessively into these games for a while and burning out quickly once I've figured out the basics and it starts to become little more than a daily grind :( I think the key (for me in particular) is to find other players that are fun to game with. If I can do that then there's a good chance I'll stick around.

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far. Well, except that guy saying I should go Fyros ;) I really appreciate the help and the feeling that it's actually ok to be new and clueless for once. A rare situation for most online games!

Actually, that's exactly what I've done :D I just *dig* the Zorai.

I've just entered world for the first time, but I'm working on remapping the movement keys to WASD setup so I can use keyboard/mouse at the same time.

ok, i can give u another tip then.

to run you can do one of the following:
hold both mouse buttons
use cursor keys
press 'end' for autorun

or remap if none of those are suitable for ur needs i guess

I accidentally discovered the "hold both mouse buttons" one and find I use it a fair amount already. I think I'll remap the autorun key since I'm so picky hehe.
