After reading over the forums, I am certainly impressed with the maturity of its members. It seems that the player base is not infested immature kiddies who use words like, "wtfpwned", "ftw", etc, etc repeatedly in every post. I am in a wonderful guild in WoW that is certainly going to be hard to leave, however playing a game where the majority of the population has the mentality of an 8 yr old is not my cup of tea. I am looking forward to the crafting aspect of this game and meeting new friends, and hopefully joining a a wonderful guild that will accept me :) I am not a powergamer by any means..I am 22 years old with a 3 year old little girl + a full-time job. I enjoy digging deep into a games lore and getting sucked into the game, and I am impressed with this game so far :)
Yes, the stereotyped "omgwtfhax00rzz!1!", "stufn00b", "omgh3s5pl0ting" etc. etc. is fortunately hard to find in SoR. Though, depending on your playing style and company, you could sure get a lot of:

- Ding!
- Grats :)
- GRATZZ
- g =)

Enjoy your stay, I sure am!

Wow, thanks for the input. You guys have definitely sold me on the game, and I look forward to trying it out. I'm waiting for another hour and a half to start my last final, then its home free for three months! You have to love the long summers in collge :-)

There is something I'm still unclear about though. What are player-created events? I mean they are obviously in-game events created by players, but how do they work? It seems from reading deep into your comments (this thread and others) that they are an intregal part of the game and push the story forward, but how are they started and what do they do? Its a part of an MMO that I am definitely not familiar with, although I do look forward to them.

This community seems great, I am definitely blown away by the lack of "stfu noob" responses that seem to plague EVERY help thread ever written in WoW. That alone is worth my time. By the way, if I ever happen to say something along the lines of "I hate 12 year olds" it isn't actually that I hate 12 year olds. Its unfortunately a habit of mine left over from WoW that I am going to work to break, as we classified basically everyone who didn't act like an adult as a 12 year old, and/or kiddies. I am sure there are mature people playing this game who are under the age of 18, and terms like that are in no way meant as derogatory towards you. If you act like an adult, you are an adult in my book. I will try to stay away from such comments, and from what I've seen they most likely won't even have any merit, but I just wanted to give a heads up.

Alrighty, I'm off to read the lore a bit more seeing as it seems to be a HUGE part of this game, and I don't want to be lost. Thanks again for the wonderful input.

Ahhh so young... ;) I was once like that! When did I become jaded?

Ryzom is low on 133t speak and seems to have a fairly high average age compared to WoW. (which some would say leads to way too much love and peace, but that's another story)

Enjoy the game, it rocks! But take the promotional material with a grain of salt.

Feel free to ask all the questions you want after you've searched the forums. The community here in Ryzom is great and might be what will keep you playing.

Okay, did some forum digging, and here are some examples of the recent player-created events:

Crafting Face-Off

Gladiator

Simulated Mass Guild Warfare

(There are also weddings, if you are so inclined.)

How they are started

What do they do? Err, well, just what you would expect them to do; be a fun event that is player-run, adding a little life to the game :) . In the case of some inter-guild events, you could say that there is a little bit of informal ranking.

I hope this post doesn't start anyone off at me, but, in all honesty the events seem to favour medium to high end players (in my experience). This is probably a bit too general, as i think ALL players will get something out of events but sometimes, low level players may not even be able to get to events (without help - which can be a mini-event in itself) and when they do there might be some issues with how much a very low level player will be able to contribute.

The community, however is terribly supportive and all the comments i have just made would probably disappear after a few weeks' modest playing...so please don't let me put you off.
