Just remember the newbie isles may be a little quiet, but thats because people don't stay there long before heading to the mainland :)

The Tryker main land is the hardest to get out, but it has beaches.
The cities in the fyros main land are hard to get too, and are in defferent regions
Matis main land has the arena, but no water to go in for safty
The zoria main land is pretty safe, but if you are a zorian then you are blue and have weird mask

also if you're in truble you can run into water and the mobs will stop attacking
get atleast lvl 20 in all branches
stock up on dappers before you leave the newbie island so can buy better stuff on the main land

My lvls when I left were
Melee 27
range 25
magic 20
craft 20
harvest 20

note: when you get over lvl 20 in fight it splits into melee and range which start out at lvl 21

Here are my suggestions for you (more of a if you are interested in this these may be more for you, not you should do this ;) )

First, What race should you be?
This depends on a couple things.
1) Do the looks make you want to choose one? This is up to you.
2) If you read the lores the different races believe in either kami or karavan; so does the alliance of the race matter to you? Remember however that if you choose a kami aligned race such as zorai that does not mean you can't believe in the karavan, That is up to you!
3) Next consider the different kinds of lands you will be playing on. There are four different lands: desert (fyros), jungle (zorai), forest (matis), and last but not least waterlands (tryker). The different lands can be harder than others to start out in. The waterlands most will say are the hardest ones to play in so maybe you don't want to start a tryker till you have played before? That again is up to you :) You may want to start four characters out right away, one in each land. Don't worry about dieing or anything when you load into each one, just take a run around the four beginning lands and see what one you find the most visually appeasing that you would like to start playing in. (when you have been playing for longer you can go on treks to go to the other lands, so if you pick fyros (desert) that does not mean you wont see the jungle ever ;P)
I think those are the main things you should think of when starting

What skills will you be interested in, so where should you put your first three points you can designate. If you want to do it all (like me) then put 1 in magic, 1 in craft, and 1 in dig. The reason for this is because you can still fight with your hands but you cannot do any of the rest if you don't designate it (you can do it later during game play but it is more expensive ;) ). Maybe you want to just do fighting though. In this case I would put 1 or 2 in to melee and 1 or 2 into magic. When I started playign I planned on fighting most and just digging a tad on the side and craft when I can. Well now I fight little and dig and craft only :P So things can change as you try them out, but remember not every skill is for everyone in this game, you are free to do many things and enjoy many areas of the game.

When do you leave the beginning island?
Well, you can leave sooner or later :P very broad answer I know but it depends how comfortable you feel with it. My suggestion is to stay on the beginning island till you feel comfortable with the game play and probably about 20 in melee and magic (doesn't matter what your dig and craft is as those go faster on the next land :) ). You want to be around 20 in melee and magic though because it does make leveling easier there. Though I say 20s in those two skills stay longer if you feel you need it. Also realize that there are not as many people in the beginning lands as in the next lands. So once you teleport over you will see more people.

Finally, Who am I? My name is Caitiff and I am a zorai. If you ever would like help with a question and I am on I would be more than glad to help you out. To shoot me a tell type in your chat channel /tell Caitiff <text> If I am not online it will tell you :) Take care, enjoy your time in the lands, and the best of luck to you with whomever you choose

It seems that elemental magic is the most powerful fighting skill. Harvesting is pretty important because it can make you alot of money and it is necessary to support any crafting skill you might choose. Some crafting skills make lots of money when you reach the high end of skill level, and also do quit nicely just selling to NPC's. If you join a guild when you hit the mainland, depending on the guild of course, you can advance in fighting skill much more rapidly because of the support of hunting or grinding skills level with guild mates, and your harvest skill can advance pretty rapidly just being a caretaker (a much appreciated skill) for a higher rated harvester. If you decide you want to be a Medic mage, then joining a guild is almost a requirement. I have made a few characters over just testing the fastest way to get to 50 skill level, and have concluded...just come to the mainland of Fyros or Matis immediately, seek out a large guild and join it, make friends and team up and work skills. If you are a loner type, then stay on newbie island until you get all 3 skills up to around 50 level is my advice. I like Fyros best because I don't have to deal with so much trees and bushes, although Matis is quite beautiful. Tryker land I never cared for as I had to waste too much time swimming everywhere.

Bah, don't listen to any of them. :)

Create a character (any will do), jump into the game and have a look around.
Don't mind getting killed, getting lost or fell helpless.
Just get a fell for the game and the interface.
If you fell like it, try all races.

And while you are haveing a look around with race you want to play, have a look at the names, if you want to use one that fits the race. Good for RP :)

Now, if you still need some help, read all the other posts, you will now have a better understanding of what they are telling you. ;)
And remember, we are here to help you, so ask away. We, and the guides/GMs, will do what we can to help.

This worked for you because you already played the game. For someone new I feel that the starter island helps out till they feel comfortable.

As you can probly tell by the oustanding number of quality replies, one of the best things you can do is talk to others and seek out the generous folks that inhabit this land.

Each one have a style of playing.
Personally I left N00b Island when I was at 50 in all branches. (well, exept fight, coz there are not enough stronger mobs) Took me about 1 month. Maybe 5 weeks. But having a solid base and a month of practice will sure help you to understand the game. I also deleted a couple of characters - some of them pretty advanced for a newbie (lev 39 harvesting, lev 31 craft) when I discovered that I messed the build a bit.
Ah, you can't "ruin" a character. Worst thing that can happen is a slower advance.
Is up to anyone. If you want powerleveling, you shoud leave the island as soon as possibile and join a guild. They will level you very fast, but be warned: DO NOT become a healing monkey. (you will understand what I mean soon enough). If you want a linear progression, level 20 in all branches would be enough. If you want to understand game mechanics, leveling and bricks system, try to discover them by yourself. Take your time and mess with them how much you wish.
