The thing that did it the most for me is the setting and backdrop of Ryzom. It has the feel of a really really good SF novel.
I really want to know what the Living Plantet is all about. What the Kami and Karavan really are? If the Kitins serve another purpose? Who exactly is Jena? What is the Dragon of the Myth? What's the goo and if they have correlation to sap? All that stuff.
If only the story is more involved in-game and move on at a faster pace ... *cough*more rites and events please!*cough*
What is it about the Saga of Ryzom?

It has a certain je-ne-sais-qua that is undefinable, an atmosphere that slowly entangles and fascinates you.
A community that opens its hearts to any who truly wants to take part and share.
And a serious reason for me: no bl**dy elves, dwarves, undead skeletons, orcs or similar Tolienesque features! <g>

I survived Patch 1.
I'm not so sure about Episode 2.

I must admit too, I just love it..My friends and co-workers have gamed SWG,DaoC,Horizon,EQ2 and WoW none of these games looks like or is near Ryzom... They always tell me Ryzom is no good but they havent tried it yet but I have tried and seen some of the others... Can´t tell what it is exactly that catches me in Ryzom (except graphics/edit skills)but it does in some strange way and I will contiune until they pull the plug..

Re: What is it about the Saga of Ryzom?
For me it's the open skill system.
I look at WoW and all the others and think they have some very cool features, but as soon as look closer I see all the restrictions of a 'traditional' class based system and when I compare that to the freedom I have here I just can't turn my back on it.
In all honesty, if Ryzom were to flop horribly, I would forever hate Nevrax because every other game seems too restricting now... I have to play Ryzom because it's the only game that really does allow you to do whatever you want, whenever you want.
So thanks Nevrax, you better keep going because your cursed open skill system has forever ruined every other game for me...

Re: What is it about the Saga of Ryzom?
Lazarus has an incredible point.
I started playing not even a week ago. I am still on the trial. I plan on extending to a full purchase and subscription. I am truly amazed with this game. It is the most visually stunning game of it's kind while still being able to not be so heavy on system resources. As mentioned before the backdrop storyline is the most intensive I've come across. It is a whole hell of a lot better than, "There were these people, then these monsters came, and now we gotta kill the monsters."
From what I have read here though, and experienced. The storyline is very difficult, if not, impossible to get into. That will be a problem for me. I play games for story, and when I saw this one's backdrop I was there, immediately.
It is simply a phenominal piece of artwork with untold potential.
More story please!

It would be wonderfull if the events ingame became history in the lore pages. so we all get a little place in atys history. We shape the world now
