aye I feel we are venturing a bit far from my original intent.
This is probably due to my poor wordings of the thread title and poll
I just wanted some sort of in-game world bullentin boards, one for GMs to post annoucements and news to, and one for players to put up their personal messages, ads, etc, on.
Not really meant as in-depth "discussion" forum, that's what these here forum at the website is for. Just a place to broadcast messages to everybody in game, and be able to see again, and allow players who weren't on at the time the messages were broadcast would still be able to see it. (The MOTD you can miss if you weren't logged on).
Heck, use the current in-game guild forum engine, that would certainly work (cept they have to code some sort of thread ownership/deletion mechanics, that seems to be lacking. And maybe even an auto prune mechanics to delete threads that are inactive after a certain date).

If they did something like this, I'd also like them to greatly improve the notification system (as in, make one) for in-game communication. With the current forum/mail system in the game, there's no notice that a new message is there. You have to actively go search it out. If they have a notification system that alerts you when you have a new mail or when a new post is made to a forum you are interested in, then I think it would be used a lot more.
Something like that is already beeing worked on I think and hopefully implemented soon, as seen on :

well, actually you can show these forums ingame, but the browser sadly is not nearly sophisticated enough to display them and support login etc.
all it manages is the front page and the archive index, but well, the foundation is laid

if somebody knows a really simple forum software and would be willing to experiment a bit with me, i can give instructions in pm

This would be good. Not a discussion forums, but something more like a post it note board. Maybe something for event reminders and something for crafters.

Current in-game forum is just bad and needs much improvement before it would be usable as a world wide forum. However, if these can be fixed, I would love such board. Making posting bit hard would be ok so forum would not be cluttered. I liked the npc idea.

making a www board IG would just end up with a cluttered forum not being watched by most ppl others than the ones who visit the forums here.....
the NPC idea i like, and i also have something to add on that...
City welcomers can offer information the way they did on the Noob islands and tweaking that is what popped to mind as the easiest thing to do...
Now if a crafter could go to the welcomer and fill in a form similar to :
[Name] - [Craft#1
*] - [Craft#2
**]
and the welcomer offered information to ppl in a form like:
''What crafter are u looking for?
Weapons
Armour
Jewels''
weapons and armour could have subcategories like
Weapons: 1h,2h,cc
Armour: light,med,heavy
for easier access to what u want
welcomer text [if the weapon category was chosen] could be something like
''Which type of weapon crafter are you looking for?
One Handed
Two Handed
Close Combat
All''
Ofcourse the crafter should be allowed to pull his name from the pool of public crafters at anytime by accesing a city welcomer...also to prevent from double/wrong entries etc crafter should pull out and resubmit his form in order to add/remove a skill
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
*this would have to be a drop down menu so we get a few categories and not one for evry crafter
**more craft dropdown menus appear as long as u pick ur craft, allowing u to enter more than one skill if so desired, already chosen crafts are NOT in the dropdown list..

Voted NO to the ingame forum though i would like to see some way for crafters and buyers to advertise thier wares/needs (maybe specific to each land?) , also id like to see both "Event" (like the old Universe channel but only there for events) and "Land" (ie Witherings/Aeden Aqueus/Lands of Umbra/etc... permanent channel's covering the whole map area that you are in) chat channels implemented
Maybe the Event channel could (should?) be read only except for Guide/GM/Event Official's
ummm digressing (sp?) but i feel more comunication is needed ingame but that a forum would soon get spammed to death and ignored

I think maybe having the 2 seperate works best. Said that though, something along the same lines that would be nice is the ability to "chat" with those IG while you're Out of Game. Basically the ability to log into chat (guild, pm) while not being logged into the game.
<offtopic>
The NeL sources are open GPL'd My gues is that the chat system is part of it. It would need 'somebody' to code a chat application derived form the NeL sources that logs you into the game and lets you chat on the availible channels.
*waits for 'somebody'*
