It's not lack of ATS testing thats slowing things down it's the time taken to fix bugs and internal re/testing, the testing loops on itself till the bugs are fixed. They've stated they hand pick testers and will accept more in order to test outposts properly. There not being hampered by lack of ats testers it's there internal test team that's slowing them down, too few people.
Also guild wars is a new and i'd say fairly mainstream game they've got the luxury of more people wanting to test than they can probably handle so charging is a good way to limit the numbers.
nb Probably help if you explained exactly what guild wars is doing that you think might work here or is so good. Not sure about comparing an OS with a game there like chalk and cheese.

I seriously doubt that , things like hardware report and number of usefull bug report are seriously lower in my opinon. Certainly more focused work whas done , but its mostly due to the nature of the Development process and the target wich the dev have to reach, wich is obviously different.
More eyes = more bug reports , it dont necesarely translate into more bug fixed or more content creation or better developper understanding of what is tought to be wrong. But in the end it translate to faster development and a better final product if the Dev are responsive.
You fail to show the proper data to back your claim , hence you wil not convince me of millions of other project searchable achievment that prove your point as inacurate. I will agree to disagree with you here, sorry.
Testing a game is very different to playing a game. As data to backup my claim, I work at the largest in house QA facility in Europe. Bug quantity is nothing, quality is everything. In Focus Beta, people played to test. On the ATS that is also meant to be the main issue. I believe that the ATS should only be open to select testers; not everyone knows what a bug is or how to write it up properly. Letting everyone onto would probably put a lot more bugs into the database, yes, but this is not necessarily a good thing. It does not translate to a faster development. It does not translate to issues being tested on the server being delivered faster. It would just create clutter. A few good testers are much better than lots of unproven ones.

Yes, people may pay to beta test GuildWars, but probably the only reason is because it hasn't been released yet(and because its mainstream and highly anticipated by a bunch of people). The use of that example is poorly chosen and does not effectively back up your claim.moulije wrote:"Feel free to offer your extensive research and qualified report that show that more people will come on the server when they have to pay for it instead of simply filling in a request form."

I wonder how manny people will actualy play guildwars after it gets out of beta. I recall a MMORPG (can't remember the name) that had a nice beta population but when it hit live the players left cause they seen the game, where not that interested in paying for it so the game was dropped soon after or even duting beta ?
People pay to play a beta ? If it is in the business plan... nice added revenue before launch then
