its implied consent... if you continue to play without telling them you don't want to stop, they assume you want to continue. Unless you tell them to stop (as is stated in the contract you agreed to) then the payment goes through. Its not a scam, its all legal and is done everyday by thousands of companys.

I can't think of any specific examples, but isn't it common knowledge that most free trials that require a credit card to sign up for will charge you by default after the trial period? Or charge you for something else intermittently if you don't opt out, etc. If you didn't know, it's best to read the signup info any time your CC is taken for anything.

The fact is, you probably should have read the textual info that was in front of you around about the time it asked you to enter YOUR FULL CREDIT CARD INFORMATION. Didn't you wonder why you had to do that?
That being said, I do agree that the auto-charge thing is a bit of a shifty practice, especially when they charge you for the full box as a part of it. I chalk it up to Nevrax being ever so slightly desperate for additional funding due to the game being expensive to develop and them not getting the number of subscriptions that they deserve.
On the bright side, Ryzom has a lot of really good points to it. Sorry to hear you won't be sticking around, and hope you get this ironed out.

THis isn't shifty practice, or Nevrax being desperate. Read further back in the thread and you'll see a list of several other MMORPG's that do the very same thing. Its standard practice. Nothing dodgy or shifty about it.

Exactly, SOE do the same thing and look at the size of them.
