Not quite what I meant mate
I mean most people would use GMT as a reference if asked about time zones, NOT BST. Believe it or not, some people don't even know what BST is (yes they know the clocks change for saving, we're talking terms and definitions here).
Just because we're on BST now, doesn't mean people are using the term BST to refer to the current time. Matter of perspective
Remember the Windows setup routine? GMT - 10 hours, GMT + 2 hours, etc. They don't mention or use BST, since it's a wandering time zone, and means little to most people.

Ah I see you meant the
TERM BST when referring to the time. Why didn't you say so?

That's because BST isn't a time zone, it's a regional adjustment originally introduced to give school kids more daylight.

Like I said, they're not using the
TERM GMT either. We use the correction, we don't use the term.

The UK is the only time zone that I know of that actually changes with Daylight savings. Everyone uses daylight savings (mostly) but no one's tme zone name changes. Terribly confusing.
Best if people just say "Xpm UK" time. It'll save alot of confusion overall.

Blimey, you're almost as picky as I am
OK then, most people wouldn't use the term BST
when quoting a time. Have some of that

um... not true. CST = Central Standard Time here in the States where I live (Chicago area). But, during the summer, it's called CDT (Central Daylight Time). Same with all of our time zones. EST becomes EDT; PST becomes PDT.
CST = GMT-6, but CDT = GMT - 5 and BST = GMT + 1.
The whole issue *is* very confusing, but using the changeable UK time doesn't help anyone except those of you in that timezone (IMHO). Use GMT because it's a standard. Know what your timezone is at any given moment and what it's offset is from GMT. The rest flows from those 2 pieces of information. In the UK, during winter, your timezone is GMT; during the summer, it's BST or GMT+1.
I'd almost be tempted to agree with your call to use UK time except for 2 groups of people:
1. Anyone living south of the equator. Our Aussie friends switch to "summer" time at exactly the opposite time of the year from us. So even though I'm consistently 6 hours offset from UK time, their time varies by 2 whole hours depending on season.
2. Some parts of the U.S. don't use day light savings. For one area in Indiana, for example, they never switch from CST to CDT. They stay at CST.
We'll never get this right if we don't using something that is generally agreed upon and standard. GMT is that answer.

One more bit of confusion (yes, I'm replying to myself; what? you don't talk to yourself?). Even though the correct timezone on the East Coast right now is EDT, many will often continue to say EST. Everyone seems to refer to their own local time with some local variant. (i.e. UK Time, BST, GMT, which is it, Brits?)
Please, please, let's standardize on the GMT standard. Each person then only needs to remember what their local offset is at any given moment. Each locale will have one or two answers to that question because of day light savings. This way, I don't care if an American uses "EST" incorrectly during the summer. I only care that they use GMT correctly.
Edit: Even more confusion. Clocks changed in Europe: 27th March 2005. USA, Canada clocks change: 3rd April 2005. GMT is stable.

GMT GMT GMT GMT GMT
GGGGGGGGGGG MMMMMMMMMMMMMM TTTTTTTTTTTeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee......dotdotdot
Ahem. Indeedy, I agree - GMT is the way to go. Can we get some input from people in other euro timezones please - are you all subject to daylight saving time? If we have to wander between GMT and GMT+1 for people in the UK, will that cause confusion for other players?
i.e., in British Winter Time (BWT - (c)Daz 2005),
18:00 GMT would be
19:00 GMT+1 in Paris.
However, when we switch to summer, if the UK uses the term
18:00 GMT+1, what's the time in Paris? Is it still
19:00 GMT+1? Damn I've confused myself now...
EDIT: Just visited your link above, yep this could be confusing
The main problem will be for UK players - in error, some of us refer to GMT the whole year round - when in fact, we're adjusted to GMT+1. *headache*

See this is the point I was trying to make. This is why I suggested jsut using x UK time. People know how to adjust from there.
BTW..I will be at the event. This is the kind of thing I love helping with

And this is exactly why I disagree with you. It's very easy to get confused. If someone told me that something was happening at UK time, I don't always remember the offset. So, I would have to look it up. In doing so, during the summer at least, I'd have to do 2 different conversions because most of the conversion sites use GMT as their starting point.
The one redeeming fact of GMT is that it doesn't change and there are a couple of really good internet resources that will help you convert your time (regardless of which exception you are stuck with) to/from true GMT:
http://www.greenwichmeantime.com/
http://www.timezoneconverter.com/
I'm open to the idea of using the term "UTC" instead if it's common for folks in England to mis-use "GMT" during the summer. But I'm suggesting we pick something that doesn't change with the seasons because not everyone uses day light savings and some use it at the opposite time of the year (silly Aussies).
At some point,
we need someone in charge (is that Lawrence? I'm new here)
to make an executive decision and say "Thou shalt always list all events using X. You can list *additional* timezones, but you must start with X." Whatever X is, I'll live with it. But, let's get a single standard so we all know what to expect.
So, if the standard is GMT, then it's OK to list the start time for UK Time, EST and Melbourne time as long as the first thing in your announcement is GMT. If the standard is UK time, that's fine too (although I'd prefer GMT), but can we please get a standard from the moderator?
Please?
