The natural ability of plant material to compost, would in fact provide at least dirt. It's a bit of a stretch to form that into sand (some say it is actually more like sawdust) or rock, but an easier stretch than none.

but sawdust would make good fertile ground, while sand would not. The deserts are mostly barren other than a few hardy plants. perhaps the sands are made out of things like hardened dry sap...
