I love the flexibility of the game and what is possible to do with it. However, - absense of content, lack of 'thought through' material and, in times, common sense makes me wonder if there is anything better out there.
I stuck around with ryzom for the past year; i'll hang around a bit more and see if anything changes for the better. If not....
I really hate to say this, but I feel the same way. Today is the first time since the start of the game where I have actually considered trying other games.

Interesting thing i found; as I said in my message before - I went out to get Guild Wars pre-order (figured $10 - why not) in Best Buy, along the way I figured i'll pick up Nvidia 6800 Ultra Card in CompUSA; ended up visiting 2 stores looking for the card - both stores had Guild Wars (3 different packages) and NONE had ryzom. For those that dont know Guild Wars is in BETA....
I took time to specifically look around and see what Online Games were available. I have located a shelf worth of Ultima Online (~12 different releases), Horizons, EQ, Dark Age of Camelot, Star Wars Galaxies, WOW.
and no Ryzom.
I have only one comment to ryzom marketing / development departments - keep it up, the best you will be able to do is to showcase the new engine, perhaps it will pay off...

You won't find it, and if you ask about it, you will most likely be told there no longer carying it.
Last I checked with EB they stated they got a limited shipment of it and there only getting it in on special order only, there not going to cary it anymore.
Same goes for Babages, GameStop, and a few others, there all on by-order, pre-pay only, they won't even order it unless you pay ahead of time for it.

I can happily say this is not true. The Saga of Ryzom
is a good showcase for NeL, one look and you know it to be true. But the game wasn't developed for the sole purpose of showcasing NeL and there is no need to worry that the developers have decided to forget about the game in pursuit of something else. In fact the devs are as dedicated as ever before in getting this game running flawlessly. We plan on being around for a long time

As long as selling the Nel Engine keeps Nevrax in business I am happy.

This seems to be a new trend. Did anyone else participate in the WEEK long beta of WISH? Yep just a testing ground for their game engine, but they didn't take it as far as Ryzom, three days after open beta WISH pulled the beta and ALL other plans, but their engine is selling happily.
I hate to be cinical...but when reality comes calling...you can either face it or slam your head under the sand, and I don't like sand in my ears.

That's what everyone said when we all started playing Asheron's Call 2, what happened? Everyone quit
Although I've heard that some people have come back to the game. It's now just a shadow of it's former self though, lot of wasted potential in that game. At least the PvP and musical instruments were fun, not enough redeeming qualities to keep me playing though.
It's nice to be optimistic though, hopefully I'm wrong in this case and Nervy will deilver us the promised content of uberness that will attract more players by the legion. So keep thinking that and perhaps it will! This game will get fun and we'll all live happily ever after and joy joy joy!
..............and they'll implement a Z-Axis too
P.S. @Cerest can you give us a rough number of devs working on this game and a head count of players on this server?

With all due respect - if I were the one writing the business plan and I had a piece of software that can potentually be sold on the same terms as Quake engine and I was doing it for money - I would do exactly that:
Develop an engine, develop a showcase for it and sell the thing to anyone that asks for it. A profit corporation is there to generate ... profits.
I truly hope that your statement is correct; I do however, question whether the big cheeses have different agenda that is not exactly being publicized.
