I'm not entirely sure about this, but in a previous US based MMOG I played we in the UK were excluded from contests and the same point was made. The answer was because of the different laws regarding online contests/gambling/whatever made it a bit of a legal minefield for companies with global customers.

This is the trouble with the internet right now - the whole world has equal access, but not equal laws. Personally I'd hate to work in the legal department of a global company, must be a nightmare.

Seems odd that Holland would be excluded though. Holland is part of the EU so I'd have thought any relevant laws would be the same as in France.

I know it is not discrimination ...
was just exaggerating a bit ;)
But i wondered if it was true, will ask a gm about it

There are in fact legal issues involved here. Nevrax is looking into this problem at the moment.

Could be technological import/export, taxation of 'gifts' or a thousand other things.

It is a nightmare.

if a company buys something they have to be able to prove they actually bought it.. if it's given away for a contest then.. ;)

It's not against the law to lose something you paid for, you just end up paying more taxes on it :) Companies keep records of what they buy so they can reduce their apparent profits, and thus their tax requirement at the end of the financial year... Plus nVidia may well have provided the cards for the contest, or some nVidia distributor in France maybe - that's usually the way with competitions, rather than a company buying stuff to give away.
