Nowadays it might be easier to leave newby land right after character creation. Join a guild, get a Q100 jewel and light armor set and group with any other newby for the first 20-30 levels.
But wheres the fun in that Sky :P

Thanks for the advice folks - much appreciated.

Since I have melee >30 & offensive magic >25 I'll finish off a couple of hanging missions then finally hand in my training wheels tonight.

See you all in the "adult" area

(maybe I'll work out how to use the forum smilies as my next challenge =/ )

A little tip with the forum smilies - no dashes :) i.e. :-) won't work, you need to remove the -

I found this out quickly, as I like a nose on my smiley usually :D

Just FYI, I put a long detailed post on this a while back in the beginner's guide section...

*points at thread he mentioned in his first post* Yeah, thats the one ;)

Also, as for the smilies there is a "Smilies are On" thing down at the bottom of the page, click it (or the one I just said) to show a new window with smilies in :)

When I was a lowly refugee on the Fyros island I knew I had to look after myself to stay alive in this hostile world. I started my career with a craft, harvest and magic pack as flexibility is the key to survival.

It didn't take many hunts to figure out that quality equipment was the key to success. As soon as I realised this I sought out whatever choice materials I could find to craft myself a set of armour and weapon I would be proud to wear as I entered the great city of Pyr.

When I arrived my preparedness paid off as weaker homins fell around me. Unfortunately I had not developed my casting skills so I could not offer my rezzing services. It didn't take much practice to advance in this area.

Once I joined a guild (http://www.ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11008) I realised I could have accepted the Kami offer and teleported to the Imperial Dunes as soon as I arrived.

If you require more information don't hesitate to contact me and I'm sure for the right price I can help you.

(OOC: You can leave noob island as soon as you like with no penalty as there are plenty of yubos to kill on the mainland - ok things will be a bit more challenging. However, once this character leaves, it can never go back so I wanted to explore a bit and see what mats I could find. You can level up insanely quickly to a reasonable level in a team/guild if you leave a bit 'early'. It doesn't sound like you'll have any problems, maybe I'll see you when I'm in Aeden Aqueous next)

Firstly: thanks to Nae for his patience in answering questions & a BIG thank you to Neun for his help once I reached Fairhaven.

.........................

I did read the threads on starting out - and much like this thread itself there seems to be no accepted wisdom on moving out. Each thread seems to have a different take on things.

I have no experience of the melee / magic side of the mainland yet but can say after last night that Foraging (and by extrapolation Crafting) is a skill best learnt away from newbie island. Having racked up 10 foraging skill levels (and 8 Crafting levels) and pulled in a few level 50 mats on my first session in the real world (ahem) - I look back at the couple of seesions I spent struggling to exp on level 20 mats back in newbie island and sigh.

I look forward to seeing you all out on the sands of Atys - I'l be the one waving a pick at things that don't fight back :)

Before Frydeswinde was born, there was a Fyros by the name of Keeton and as an older nephew he taught her everything he knew. Also things like: though shalt not only dig, thou shalt craft too and how to fight and magic.

Frydeswinde felt very confident by this advice and left the island while most of her levels were hanging around in the tens, some lower. She joined a guild, was helped by her guildies with gear and advice as well as some fast xp moments.

It is all about choices, and most choices *can* be flattened out when reaching higher levels. Whatever you do, team where you can and check out the guildslist to see if there is any group there that has your interest. Please dont join a guild on a whim, these people will be your first contacts on Atys for quite a long time.

Grtz,
