Why should anyone be able to choose a faction when doing anything???

Come in, pull up a chair, let's discuss all things Ryzom-related.

Raynes, unfortunately:
**And to the person who said if I don't like it, don't play. I'm giving Nevrax till March 22 (that would be 6 months) to provide the gameplay and storyline that matters. So far to be very honest has been laughable.

Has neither any bearing on this thread, nor do they really care, honestly.

Bring this back to 'on topic', the only reason for the choice, is the fact at the core, the system just needs to know wether or not you should be allowed to damage a person in a pvp.

From what I got out of Celests notes on it, only under event circumstances would it even matter.

I see all points on this so far, where as, your current factions should determine your status in the event, which also makes more sense than giving the choice, but look at it from the devs point of view, there trying to please those true faction / roleplayers, and those who wish to play both sides of the fence.
For those who know about today, I have a supprise for you tomorrow.

CHOICE, we have a right in the US to chose our friends, where we work, IF we want to go to war (by joining the military/guard or not, even in peace time...war can come), what state we want to live in and which political party we wish to vote for...or even if we want to vote at ALL.

And the idea that a race is ALL one ideaology is folly these days. I mean we KNOW that there are Christians in Iraq (they are the target of MUCH hatred these days..but they still exist).

I tend to play the character that is "backwards" the Tryker that is kami aligned, the Matis that leans towards Kami, the Fyros that wants to tinker with Karavan technology.

I guess it goes along with my "road less traveled" mentality.

No one is saying anything about all of a race following the same thing. Lets say I am a gay man who is very out about my sexuality. Everything I have is covered in Rainbows. I show up at the Southern Baptist convention in my rainbow painted car, rainbow earrings, and my t-shirt that says "gay power, marriage is not a heterosexual institution". I walk up to the door and say I am a Southern Baptist and I want to be a part of your convention. Tell me would they welcome me with open arms?

This is the same thing. I fight for the Kami all along, walk up to an event praising the Kami, and under this system I can walk in and suddenly be loved by the Karavan. It makes no sense at all.

CHOICE ....

I don't think the system raynes is describing means you can't choose. It's just that the choice is made by all of the missions you do for the NPCs prior to the event.

You can still be a Tryker that does Kami missions and gains good fame with the Kami. When it comes time for an event, however, you wouldn't be able to simply cast that aside and pretend to be on the Karavan side for that event.

Understood, but you do know that your fame IS affected by your first "choice" on PVP fame? Yes it changes it enough that making the WRONG choice will take a bit of fame work. Not sure if killing your SAME fame players is ALSO punished...but it should be.

zumwalt wrote:The way it plays out:

You enter the Event, choose Kami or Karavan (no neutral available)
Your instant Kami fame goes to 100 if you choose Kami, and Karavan instantly goes to -1.

If you choose Karavan, its fame goes to 100, and your Kami drops to -1, and remains during the duration of the event.

When you leave the PvP area, 30 seconds later, your fame is reset.

Zumwalt, have you participated in an Event on ATS to see that this is the way it work, because that isn't the way it reads in the release notes.

The way I read it is if you have Kami +90 and Karavan -90 and you chose Kami, your fame (which type isn't clear) goes to Kami +90, Karavan -91. If you chose the traitor's route and click Karavan, then you get Kami -1, Karavan -90. If nothing else happens, e.g. your side wins, then when the event is over that's the way it stays.

If you chose Karavan with your fame at Kami -1, Karavan -90, then you get Kami -91, Karavan -90. If your side looses, you loose civilized spawn sites - game over, thank you for playing.

If the event gives massive fame and your side wins, you can change sides in a couple events -- everyone likes a winner. If you keep chosing the loosing side, no one trusts a traitor.

This mechanism also allows someone to remain neutral. E.g. in the above example you start +5/-5 you would go to -1/-5 then -6/-5.

Raynes, choosing the opposite side in an event is a big decision and would have big effects on a character's fame. If someone has done lots of missions to raise one type of fame and want to change it all quickly this is a mechanism for doing that, with the possible effect of tanking fame for both sides. History has plenty of examples side switchers, although they usually change their bumper stickers 1st. See El Cid.

Yes

Things are never as they seem from ATS to Live, this is proven time and time again.

For instance on ATS, when entering Fleeting Gardens, with the 3 choices, Neutral, Kami, Karavan, it modified faction if you choose a side, when you left the PvP area, it went back to normal.

But then again, this was how it effected my character.

Try it for yourself, I have played on ATS in the roots, in FG and saw the effects, don't take my word for it though, experience it for yourself, only way your going to be happy with knowing what is factual and what is guess work.

{edited for some more clarity}

This would be improbable, for the following reason, when entering a pvp area, you are given a 30 second warning that you have entered an pvp area.

At the end of the 30 seconds, you get a popup box, in your face question, choose a side:

Neutral
Kami
Karavan

So now you choose, lets take how you understood it into consideration.

You choose Neutral, that is a given, Kami + 0 faction, Karavan + 0 faction
You choose Kami, That would mean Karavan -1, Kami +1
You choose Karavan, Of course this would mean Karavan +1, Kami -1

Now lets look at something your missing.

You can immediately leave the pvp area, it says you have left and can still be attacked for 30 seconds, so you sit, just outside the area for 30 seconds.

Then your pvp status is now clear, but you have gained or lost some faction in accordance to your last choices.

Ok, now, you want to do this a few dozen times cause you want kami fame increased, no problem based on this formula.

You re-enter the area, guess what, a warning, 30 seconds, you choose a side, BAM, faction hit, congradulations you have modified your faction by another point.

You leave the area, get the warning you are still attackable for the next 30 seconds, so you sit and wait.

After a few shots of Jack Daniels, some popcorn, and a few good movies on tv, at 1 point gain / loss a minute, thats a whole hour straight you can bounce in and out, modifying your faction, so in less than 2 hours you are +100 / -100, solid gold.

So if its that simple now, only to spend 2 hours of my game life, to get the faction I want, then the devs did me a huge favor and I never have to do a mission again.

I could be wrong.

{another edit}
Basically the only true way were going to be able to find out is when or if we ever have a pvp event where it is strict karavan vs kami, then we can see for ourself how it plays out on live server.

Sorry if I am a bit confusing, I know it can be.

So if I am understanding this right, you go to an event. Up to the event you have a +99 Kami and -99 Karavan. You decide that you want to fight for the Karavan so you pick that choice. Accordingly the game changes your fame levels so that your Kami becomes -1 and your Karavan becomes +100. After the event is over your fame returns to the same state it was before the event?

I really, really, really hope you are wrong. It's disgusting enough that you can follow one side, then suddenly join the other without a second thought. But to be able to join the opposite side for an hour, kill your allies, go against the very wishes of the group, then suddenly become buddies with them again like nothing happened, that is just whacked.

From what cerest explained to me in klient this is mostly correct (you would still incur any normal fame gain/loss that was achieved during the event to your permanant fame).
