Well, if you haven't looked at the OS anytime recently, how can you say that it's graphically challenged? Graphics depend on the Graphics card, not the OS.lyrah68 wrote: Granted I haven't looked into the state of Linux, but when I did. The games for it were umm graphically challenged would be a kind way to put it.
OpenGL is the main gfx driver for most *nix boxes, which happens to be 95% of the exact same code as the OpenGL on Windows. It looks and runs the same. Maybe even better due to better memory/thread management.
I really question why you would want to run windows apps on linux boxes. If you want a windows app, run it on windows environment. Emulated programs are always slow as hell, and buggy.
Umm.... If you can play hours of ryzom, would 20 mins of research kill you?lyrah68 wrote:But then I am a full time mom and business owner, I don't have time to spend looking for something better than the latest MS bovine scatology.
Re: GFUNK's plea to Nevrax and the community...
To everyone saying there is no need for a Linux client :
Did you know NeL (the source code for Ryzom engine) is open source ?
I think a developper who decide to go open source should make the game playable on open source OS. Open source works because many programmer spend their free times ironing the OS. If they want programmers to work on NeL they should make it availible to them. If they want programmers to be interested in NeL they have to encourage them to play Ryzom. One way to do this is to support Linux, because most open source programmers use Linux and dont want to install windows on their machine just to play a game.
Whats the point in making an open source engine if you dont try to appeal to the open source community ?
Open Source assure constant developpement and ironing of bugs, thats why Linux is more stable then window.
Nevrax decided to go open source with NeL but they are doing it the wrong way. Right now, no one (maybe except GFunk) is working on the engine outside of Nevrax. If they want the engine to be improved and ironed by the community they have to appeal to them. A Linux client would be one of the best way to gain popularity with the linux user/programmers/gamers and assure the success of going open source for the engine.

Re: GFUNK's plea to Nevrax and the community...
I ran linux for a short while, but for practicality's sake, switched back to windows. Linux is more stable, faster, and yeah I hate Bill Gates with the best of them, but it quickly became hard to justify running Linux on what was really just the principle. Windows XP, if run carefully, can be problem free (if you can use Linux practically you can do this :P ). If you want that odd piece of Windows software to run as nice as it can, without eating up your time working on it, run Windows on one of your computers! Run it for the games -- you can still hate it 8)
This has been a totally random comment having nothing to do with anything or anyone. I already know that you and your circumstance are different, dear reader. Thank you.

Re: GFUNK's plea to Nevrax and the community...
There is a linux version, it is unsupported one though
I tried it, and i got better performance out of Windows version then Linux. I work/design both systems fluently for a living - in the end of the day; - i'm using windows.
With that - i'll throw my support for Linux version request. It would be a small effort on developer's part to automate patches.
To throw a hand to Gfunk - why dont you set up filesystem mountable under both, linux and windows (or share linux partition with virtual pc/secondary pc) through NFS. Install windows on some small box and use windows only for patching. that will automate about 95% of the patch process, all you will need to do after the fact is manually patch executable files (data file structure wont change from what i understand).
This way, when a patch comes out, log into windows, patch the game, log into linux, manually patch executables (2 or 3 of them if i remmeber correctly) and full speed ahead from that.
Granted, this is not an ideal solution, although I'm sure it will make life easier.
Alternatevely, just write a script that does the patching and post it here

And, if as Gfunk says it IS sooo close to being functional, I wouldn't be surprised if it is on the dev's list - just hasn't floated to the top of the priorities yet.
Remember, Nevvy is in two businesses - developing Ryzom AND developing a MMORPG game engine.
Re: GFUNK's plea to Nevrax and the community...
I beg to differ Atrax. Windows 3.1 is not stable at all. Remember those blue screens with lots of words beginning with general protection fault.atrax wrote:Dos was Stable And windows 3.1.
Re: GFUNK's plea to Nevrax and the community...
As an OS, Windows 3.1 / 3.11 (Workgroups) was perfectly stable - however, the general state of applications and software for 3.1 was shocking, and the quality of drivers back then doesn't even bear thinking about
Also, wasn't the blue screen first introduced with NT 4.0 / Win95?
