I used to enjoy this forum

Post by bkwrm13 »

I used to look forward to browsing these threads when I'm stuck away from my gaming machine. You'd find interesting strategies, suggestions, comments.

But nowadays I only make a quick scan for official announcements and leave.

People have said that the players here are more mature than other online gaming communities and I've said so before to fellow gamers (to get them to try Ryzom out). But I don't think that's as true today as it used to be. And please don't confuse intellectual analysis for maturity.

It would be nice if more people were more balanced in their views. Willing to take suggestions or criticism without a kneejerk reaction. I see a few users here and there and they stand out like a sore thumb because of their reasonableness.

I'm not saying that there aren't big issues with this game. I see the point of most criticisms to various degree. But it doesn't keep me from spending at least an hour a day ingame enjoying myself.

I know the phrase normally makes me want to hurl, but:
"Can't we just get along together?".

Mahalo for listening.

My answer from a previous post very similar to this one :

Thats the way forums are...

Look at various big forums related to mmorpgs in general, they are worst then here, a lot worst. Theres a big EQ2 vs WoW war going on...

The problems is that forums allows people to write anything they can think of without having to suffer from the consequence of their actions. Complete anonyma cant do any good. Of course some topic will be really good, with mature and rich subject but you will always have the bad side too.

The sad thing ive tested on various forums, is that if you start a relevant but long topic and a "flamers magnet" topic, most of the times the "flammers magnet" will stay on top longer then the good topic.

The flammers are often the most active members of a forum, its sad because this prove that flammers are actually shy and introvert. The flamming allow them to feel powerfull (complete illusion) and feel like they are listen to. Some flammers are also doing it for fun, just to get people mad.

It only take 1 flammers to have 10 or more followers, ether defending the flammers idea or proving him wrong. Thats what keeps them alive....

Most of us probably already answered to a flame, it just because when we see that kind of "all black" post about something we like, it affect us.

Anyway, if you look deeply youll always find some good post (this is one...). I wouldnt have anything to do at work if it wasnt for forums...

The problem with Ryzom board, i think, is that most people are leaving the forum, only checking for info (like you said you are doing, and like im doing too), so the good post are less frequent then before and the trolls are free...

Ah, but much like a tree falling in the forest, if a troll has no audience will he still be heard? ;)

I know the feeling.

Basically what it comes down to is that we've been lied to about a game that had HUGE potential and some neat ideas. Patch 1, and more importantly Nevrax's poor handling of it, has started a feud between those who have lost hope and those who still have it. Those who have lost hope are angry at those who still have it because we feel that they are propogating the lies. Those who have hope are angry at those who don't because they feel that we're destroying any chance the game has of surviving and getting past these hard times and on to the fullfillment of this game's potential. The catch 22 is that both are right so neither side can "win".

My stance is that I did have great hope for this game, defended it's short comings many a time, and now I've lost hope and am a bit bitter. Not bitter because I didn't get things "my way" (because I don't really have a way) but bitter because Nevvy turned a deaf ear to cries for more testing and consideration of the patch before it went into place. I'm bitter because they have made no effort to explain why they're doing the things they do. The developers are not gods and I cannot trust in them that their plan is perfect, especially when they knee-jerk patches out only after significant numbers of players cancel subscriptions. To me they've portrayed a fine combination of arrogance and incompetance. Either alone could be dealt with but together they're a deadly combination. Some say they'd rather leave the developers to code than listen and speak to the community. My response is that if they continue to code in a vaccuum, which it appears they are based on lack of communication, then they won't have a community left when they finally release their perfectly bug free code. They're using open source technology to base this game on yet they're ignoring a fundamental part of the open source methodology, communicating with their users.

I'll apologize now for anyone who feels that I may have attempted to speak for them. What I have posted here are just my thoughts on the situation and from what I've read on these boards I'm not alone. For those who's game I may further be damaging by my condamnation(sp?) I apologize but I will not take back my statements. I'm a person who, when found on the wrong end of an argument, will admit my mistake, apologize, and attempt to right any wrongs at the expense of my pride. I expect that of everyone else I communicate with because standing by your pride even when logic and reason prove it wrong is dangerous in every way.

Admit your mistakes Nevrax, let go of your ego, and start working with your community to make this a great game. It can still be done, and you may be able to pull it off your way, but this way is much easier.

Nice post, probably your best one yet. You get your feelings across very well.

There is a huge divide in the forums... those that insist on posting negative after negative, in every obnoxious or annoying manner. And those that are sick of it (called "Fanbois" to lessen their right to post). Fortunately the in-game community at large isn't as disheartening or discontent as some that frequent these forums. Even those who are hostile here are VERY helpful in-game (which confuses the hell out of me).

We can't expect this game to flourish if the forums are full of "this game sucks, I quit" posts or "I cancelled my account but I'm gonna blast the game on every thread" or "Nevvy has their heads up their collective arses" post.

I can understand that some are discouraged by the "Unsettling Events" of Patch 1. I can understand that some feel betrayed, even heart broken by what they feel is a loss of faith or confidence in a game that offered such great potential. But we also need remember that every post here starts with an "IMHO". And we need remember that we need communicate our opinions in a repectful and responsible manner.

I think the potential can be be realized. Its got some stiff competition out there but it does offer something different. The game is worth a look. Its worth a second chance.

While I completely agree they should have done more testing and all, if they had set a date then pushed it back people would be upset too.(Just like some people whined because they pushed this last patch back a day.) They fell to the people that wanted the patch here and now instead of the people that wanted it soon but correct. Quality is almost always better than quantity. No matter what they do, someone will be unhappy about it.

Boy do I think you got it right. You hit most everything right on the head.

But I agree most with your thoughts about this games competition. It is out there, but it is not exactly like this game. I can't imagine how any game COULD be exactly like this one.

Much of the competition is not based around this games skill system, and much of it does not have the general stability of this game (in EQ I went Link dead ALL the time, my system was FAR above the recommended specs, and my cable connection was ROCK solid. In this game, I get stauls, rarely, but I have YET to randomly crash to desk top, but I have heard of others that have. And I have yet to go link dead.)

And few if ANY of the competition has a viable crafting system. (if you think Horizons, well sure the crafting system works, but the lag and total lack of ANY reason to adventure kinda make the crafting system pointless, Like a water spout stuck on a rock).

I think this game appeals to a different crowd. And I think MUCH of the troubles on the forum are those that the game either appealed to for a short time, OR the game never truly ever fully appealed to.

Truly the in game crowd and even the in game behavior of forum denizens is like night and day from this forum. I honestly have only seen one or two disruptive or hateful players. And there has only been ONE situation of two groups trying to pull from a spawn that only supports one group, that I have seen, and the Cloppers did more to correct the trouble than any GM or friendly chat could.

The other group got determined to take over the camp, the raced down the hill, into the HEART of the spawn. They agroed EVERY clopper and died before they could train my group.

I would say the the mood of the forum is getting a bit better.

After patch 1, it was all

"Argh Ryzom sucks now"

"How am i supposed to fight now?"

"Ryzom mugged me and stole my shoes"

But i see more guides going up, more comments of how to get around it, with only a few "grr" posts being made.

I think...:S

I agree with you martinr. I started reading this forum after patch 1 and I dont see what bkwrm13 is seeing. The forum is realy, much more helpful and positive. There are still a few whiners around but they are leaving or have left. The only problem I have with the forum now is that there isnt more fooling around and having fun.

P.S. I lost a nickel in the sand yesterday if anybody finds it please leave it with the kami in Pyr. :)

A quick scan of today's threads make it look like I made this post too late. =) Probably the most bitter posters have decided to quit AND stay off the forum for the most part.

But some of the multipage flame wars that started off as constructive give-and-take posted earlier reminded me of the reason I stopped attending forums years before.

We can only hope this positive trend continues.
