Could someone of the "profs" explain to me why he considers soloing as harvester impossible now?
Can do it just fine with the careplans. I prospect the source and start to harvest away. Should the source life or stability drop too low I switch to the appropriate care plan to get it up again and then switch back to harvesting again.
Granted, the focus usage is high, needing with 102 credit extraction and 64 credit care plans about 1500 focus to get 5 q150 mats - but note that I extract AND heal the source.
If teamed one could use a somewhat lower care plan for costant repair of the source and the other could harvest, dividing the focus usage between both and getting about as many mats per person per prospection with a lower downtime.
Still, this doesn't make soloing as harvester eben remotely what I would consider "impossible". Could someone tell me what I am missing?

Re: The solo harvester...
I have team harvested PRE patch one, the rewards are not HALF so bad as some would imply. There was also an UNteamed harvester near by. We would help the other find the node that they were looking for (shells for the third forager, amber for my team) and when gas or explosions got too much, we would shout out for healing, and we all pretty much helped the other, even the UNteamed third party). It is pretty amazing what team work CAN do.
As far as rewards, when I popped up a node that the UNteamed player would harvest...I would gain xp. When my teammate would heal a node I would be the prospector AND harvester, and I would get the mats, then he would take a turn.
But since we were harvesting amber for three healing sticks, one for me, and two for friends...Who got what was Moot, I was going to turn them into gear for others. So we ALL won on that account.
I think for me, since I tend to give without demanding, I tend to GET without expectations in return. It is a kind of a favor system, I know who has outstanding "favor chips" and tend to help MORE than I got. As long as the circle remains UNbroken...we all win.
I have nothing against soloing OR grouping, and I would hope that ALL would be willing to give them both a shot.

Re: The solo harvester...
Shrike - this is good to hear. I have not yet tried harvesting after the patch but have been assuming that things aren't as bad as some would have you believe. I for one am glad that the developers continue to try to improve the game without dumbing it down. Harvesting was clearly way too easy before and not working as intended. Now if they would only increase experience in proportion to the number of mats pulled.
If I may ask - what harvesting skills do you recommend post-patch? Are gentle extraction skills now worth getting? Or can you still get by with harmful alone (plus source tending skills) or harmful plus mat and terrain specs? Clearly picking up a good focus heal would seem to be important to help reduce downtime.

Re: The solo harvester...
The question is, how long did that take you? how long is the downtime, and how much xp did you get? Now factor in how much time it would take you to reach the next level...
How long do you think it will take you to forage 4000+ mats necessary to level crafting?

Re: The solo harvester...
Try it for yourself first before making any decisions. Haven't seen a nerf big enough for shrike yet.
That's just it, try it and make your own decisions. You'll see what the vast majority are talking about and backing up with data in other threads.

Well I for one would like to see shrike cut back down to level 50 forage and see if he enjoys leveling up foraging now back to level 150 mats.

@ docsardo:
Care plans are a MUST. You will definatly need them.
There is no real difference between gentle and agressive harvesting currently, Gentle needs more focus, but doesn't damages the source node less. But this may change since they plan to make some more changes to harvesting.
Terrain spec and mat spec are (still) recommended, since the lower damage from them really helps.
Focus costs are high, so maxing all fous stats and heals is a good idea. I can pull alone around 15 mats before I need to rest (2075 focus and 1800 focus selfheal).
@ korin77:
Nothing you said has anything to do with foraging solo vs foraging with groups. I never said here anything if the amount of mat extracted is sufficient or if the exp is high enough. I was stating my opinion about these matters often enough and have no desire to repeat myself here again. They only thing which I spoke of here was the effeciency foraging solo vs the effeciency foraging in groups.
Where I cannot see any difference which would make solo harvesting impossible. From my observations you have no higher amount of mats per player when grouping, only a somewhat lower downtime. Which is an advantage, but nothing as critical which would make solo harvesting useless.

Re: The solo harvester...
Took me 500 focus to get locate, and then forage 2 q50 items, using all gentle stanzas, and (only by luck) source mode 1. I don't recall how much focus it used before the patch, but I only had 300 focus *total*, and I don't remember it getting very low. It probably took 200 focus to forage *3* items.korin77 wrote:The question is, how long did that take you? how long is the downtime, and how much xp did you get? Harvesting was one of those great skills you could perform while waiting for a group to form, or if you didn't have tons of time to commit to playing that particular day. It was fun in a way, because you could be social with your guild while still contributing to them, and didn't need to pay 100% attention to a game (a game without a pause button).
For me, anyways, this nerf made harvesting 378% more time intensive, assuming source mode 1. If you include all source modes, it's MUCH, MUCH higher than that.
