Sorry to necro an old post, but I've been trying to get this nailed down for a few hours, but can't get this to work properly with vista 64.
The problem it seems I'm having is the background downloader won't stay disabled on start up of the client for the 2nd time. When I check the config. file it has been reverted back to the original setup which has the background downloader enabled.
Any clarity anyone can offer is greatly appreciated.
[HOW-TO] Running two clients on one PC
Re: [HOW-TO] Running two clients on one PC
you logged out when you are doing this? config file will revert if it's being used by the program already. need to be fully logged out of ryzom and the program closed, then make the change. Then log back in. Before starting the second client.
I do recommend having ryzom in two different directories for this. Just for the fact that it does save config files when you log out, so if you do like to have one set up to have max graphics, and another set up to min graphics default and not having to change it each time you login . Also have noticed occasional bugs associated with 2 clients running off the same directory. Usually when I do this, one of the clients will pop up that message you get as your logging out, the skill points thing, then render my character unable to move, and it will crash shortly later. Doesn't happen immediately or consistently, just sometimes.

Yes, I was completely logged out with two directories running. Both files edited and once I logged in with the first it would update the config. file to reenable the background loader.
Re: [HOW-TO] Running two clients on one PC
If it's vista, try moving the folders to somewhere besides program files if they are there, like user folder or desktop should work fine.
(I personally never install game clients to the programs folder, b/c it is much simpler to deal with else where, permissions wise.)
Make sure the client.cfg is not set as read only also...
Also double check your spelling and capitalization on the
BackgroundDownloader = 0; It must be Exactly like this.
Not sure what would cause them to revert to having the background downloader on again, short of the files not saving properly before launching them. *pokes blaah*
If all else fails maybe I could email you a copy of the client.cfg with background downloader disabled and see if it works out .

Re: [HOW-TO] Running two clients on one PC
Currently I have two Ryzoms installed under my users.
C:\Users
Jeff - Primary user obviously
Ryzom Alt - Secondary user established for this
Since Vista won't allow you to directly modify the config_default file I copy the file to the desktop. Open and modify the existing BackgroundDownloader = 1; option, save to my desktop, copy and paste it into each folder which replaces the existing.
Open each newly pasted config and each one reflects being saved properly; with the option correctly set to 0. Note that I am not adding any new arguments simply modifying the existing BackgroundDownloader.
I did infact attempt to leave the existing one in and add my own in which case it still didn't work.
On a fresh attempt of trying it I get the program isn't functioning properly message from the downloader and it cancels, relauchers Ryzom and starts up properly.

Re: [HOW-TO] Running two clients on one PC
Are you trying to modify the "Client_default.cfg" file? If so that is the wrong one, you need the plain "Client.cfg" Two completely different files, though easily confusable .

Re: [HOW-TO] Running two clients on one PC
Correct, I will modify the "Client.cfg" when I get home and see if it works properly. I assumed I could simply alter the default config considering it has the option listed unlike the Client file which does not.nazak07 wrote:Are you trying to modify the "Client_default.cfg" file? Re: [HOW-TO] Running two clients on one PC
It will not work if you edit the Default one, modifying the "Client_default.cfg" can lead to some very lengty patch sessions too. I got the mixed up when I first tried it .
The first post is a little dated too by the way... all you need to do is add
/multi to the end of the shortcut and add
BackgroundDownloader = 0;
to the "Client.cfg"
You do NOT need
DisableDirectInput = 1;
as a matter of fact it's annoying, b/c it makes you lose mouse camera control.
