Ranged weapons

Post by flanteus »

hello,

Can someone tell me whats the deal with ranged weapons? are they still broken? whats bugged and whats not?
Can a new player start with ranged weapons as soon as he/she Arrive to the mainland? does it get better and more powerful later?

what about range crafting? and ammo crafting? I know its better to craft your own but does it take lots of mats to make ?

A lot of ppl are interesting in this style, So any advice or info about the current state of Range weapons?

peace..

they not broken as such, just a pain in the ass,

proposed changes were going to balance them for pvp and make them easier to level but alas it never happened.

Hey Flanteus,

Crythos our 'guild sharpshooter' Suggested you send him a tell In game he will answer all of your questions about Range.
He can't log into forums at the moment so I post this in his name.

so /tell Crythos

Take care

You could always send a tell to Final from DCP if Crythos isn't on, rumour has it, that he has a modest grasp of ranged weapons

As said ranged weapons are not broken. (Apart from some minor bugs in specific circumstances. ie: autolaunchers made with outpost materials have no AoE. Also I think the bug I described [thread=31886]here[/thread] is probably still active too. But there is nothing broken about the ranged weapons as a whole.)

Ranged weapons are however much harder to level than melee weapons or magic skills. To put it simply: Ranged weapons are extremely suited for PvP combat, but relatively weak in PvE combat. And levelling a skill is PvE combat. :o

The previous company had changes planned to make them more usefull in PvE, but those were never implemented. (You can read the discussion about it [thread=26417]here[/thread]. It's a very indepth and detailed discussion about ranged weapons, good if you want the full picture but not if you want a quick answer.)

A new player can start with ranged weapons as soon as they arrive on the mainland. But ofcourse it will be harder than starting with melee weapons. Unless you already have a lot of money, you'll have to craft your own ammo. This means you'll have to train your crafting along with your shooting. And yes, it will take a lot of mats, so you'll need to train a foraging skill too and dig your own mats. For melee, none of that is necesary.

The only skills that "get better and more powerful later" are healing magic (because of the double spell at level 100) and elemental magic (because of that and the racial spells at level 125). Apart from that all skills increase in power at the same rate; if the 2h sword is better than the 1h mace at level 50, it will still be so at level 250. Same for ranged weapons.

The most important advice to those who do want to start with ranged weapons: The one major thing ranged weapons have going for them is the ability to shoot while moving. So find a creature to train on that doesn't run faster than you, and don't let it get close enough to hit you while you kill it. Since you shouldn't be getting hit, heavy armor will only hamper you; wear medium or light armor.

Your damage will mostly depend on your ammo, so you'll need to use the right materials for making your ammo: Either koorin oil or gulatch oil, and either beckers bark or mitexi bark. Anything else and you'll be doing vastly less damage and making it much harder on yourself. Ask an experienced forager where to find an easy source of those materials, and mark the spot on your map so you can return to it whenever you need more ammo. :)

I've found that it's not difficult leveling ranged, it's difficult leveling ranged solo.

It's much easier to level if I go with a group that includes a variety of classes. If you go with just a healer it will be faster than solo, but still slow. Throw in a good melee fighter or offensive mage and you'll be leveling in no time.

I started a new character a while back on Cho, and went ranged for the primary, and also 1-H maces and shields. I craft all my own weapons (bowrifles for now) and ammo. This makes for a good series of tasks:

- go dig the needed stuff for ammo
- craft up a bunch of ammo
- go out and shoot stuff up
- repeat :)

I normally hunt the psykopla plants, they can't run and seem to die pretty quickly; have had little or no trouble leveling range solo on them. As was mentioned before, make ammo using becker's bark and koorin oil, and get your firing rate options up so you hit more often.

thank you guys, very helpful I did all your suggestions and soon will see the result :D ...

about the dmg is there anything else beside hit rating and ammo dmg, that increases my dmg? any particular skill I should learn ?

also if i used low Q weapon but higher Q ammo does it affect my overall damage? or I just cant use the ammo in the first place? (didnt try yet, but soon when i upgrade my ammo craft).

Speed stat from mats especially from Ammo Jacket is it important? and does it affect my firing rate?

peace..

Ways to do more damage with ranged:
  • Get higher damage ammo. Using choice beckers/mitexi bark and choice koorin/gulatch oil gives the maximum possible damage, so using even better materials is pointless.
  • Get a higher speed gun. The (normal*) maximum speed is 30 hpm for (bow)pistols, 24 hpm for (bow)rifles, and 12 hpm for (auto)launchers. To obtain that maximum will require some rare supreme materials.
  • Use ammo of the right damage type. If you're hunting psykopla plants, which have protection against slashing and piercing damage, switch to smashing ammo so that you do full damage.
  • Use the accurate attack stanza. It will make less of your shots get dodged or parried resulting in higher damage overall and less ammo going to waste.
  • Use the hit rate stanza. This will basicly double your gun's speed, so it doubles your damage output but also doubles your ammo consumption and your stamina usage.
You'll have to learn for yourself when it's best to use the accurate attack and when to use the hit rate. :)

Using Q50 ammo in a Q20 weapon will do damage as if the ammo was only Q20. It's always the lowest number between the Q of the ammo, the Q of the weapon, and your skill level in ranged, that caps the damage you do.

Currently the speed and the range on ammo do nothing. Same with the damage on guns. The only stat important on ammo mats is damage. The only stats important on guns are speed and range. This may yet change at some point in the future, however.

(*It's possible to get up to 10% over the maximum with rubarn tools.)

whats the difference between bow/Auto<gun> and <gun>?
I did a few researches and i found out there is no difference, so why you suggesting for me to use bow/auto? (maybe it was out dated data..)

crafting ammo gives me low exp, but I'll catch up since i hit the Quality cap for ammo crafting(level3/Quality30) at level 23 ranged crafting.

yep I've been using that ;) , but I'm not sure about the ranks it seems all the ranks have the same Accurate rate except that a higher rank will benefit higher quality weapon/ammo thats it..is that true?
its pointless to use higher ranks with low Q weapons ..

yeah I found out yesterday :)
