I'm not entirely sure what "open source" means, which may make the rest of my post redundant if I am totally wrong (will be a first, but I'm comfortable with that )elthunim wrote:*
Although Open Source is often equated with amateurism, that doesn't have to be the case, as countless Open Source development projects have shown, that often prove to be solid and useful. I think that Ryzom, if it survives, will have grown stronger from the mistakes of the past. And I want to believe an Open Source Ryzom will have as much of a chance to last and expand than a Sony Ryzom to last and stagnate.
.
I assume that it means that private individuals can buy/steal/hack it and set up private servers, if this is the case, then personally I believe it will kill Ryzom stone dead.
1. These operations are amateurish. I have played (well.... tried to play) on private servers Lineage 2 and WoW after playing the originals, there is no comparision in the quality, I could never stick them for more than maybe a week. Bad lag, code not being updated, servers down, no community, code hacked... lots of other stuff that I wont bother with, but you get my point I hope.
2. People will hive off to clique servers, for example all kara go to one, all kami another, or a guilds maybe friendly with the Host and head there, others may not like the Host and go elswhere, either way, A Host may not like a particular guild/player and not allow them access.
It will fracture an already small community into smithereens.
3. The code will be hacked, uber weapons, hacked XP, hacked skills. These will create such an atmosphere of hate and tension, it will no longer resemble Ryzom.
4. Enhanced XP, to attract new players looking for a quick fix, there will be no challenge!
I played a Lineage Private server, I was at level cap in two days, the reason for this enhanced XP, was presented to me as....."Well it makes it easier to get to the castle sieges, which is where all the real fun stuff is".
The castle sieges are great in Lineage 2 (the original), the weeks before and after these were frought with political tension.
On the private server, the castle owners were given their position at the whim of the Host, totally negating any effort by potential power usurpers. Causing incredible fights and player migration.
Anyway, just my 2 cents, hope I'm wrong.
