I think you hit the nail on the head. This game world isn't quite fantasy, but not quite sci fi. There was a post last week with a Screenie of something found in the prime roots, I thought it looked ALOT like a jet engine rotor (the part with the fan blades). But then I do live VERY near a major international airport, and several small local airports, so I tend to have planes on the brain.
I keep running into things that make me think Anne McCaffrey Pern series (actually if you read ALL of her other voluminous writings, you will realize that everything she EVER wrote all ties together, which was STUNNING to me.) I keep wondering what all will pop out of the woodwork, some rusted hulk of a Karavan ship with a map from Earth? Or some Kami ship from Alpha Centauri? Who knows, that is part of what has me hook line and sinker in this game.
I suggest to EACH new player, read the back story. There is ALOT of the history of the game world on this forum or on the offical web site...READ it. It is not as superfluous as the EQ back story, which IN game contradicted MUCH of the web site stuff and ALL of the manual stuff was so much fluffy crap. Basically after the fabric map of Kunark, I opened up the box, scanned the manual at about 500 WPM then threw manual and box in the garbage before installing the expansion.
This game, I find something new and interesting even in the welcomer mission...FYI if you haven't done that one...DO IT (there is essential back story in each races version of the welcomer.) OH I am not sure if they fixed it or not, but the Zorai's welcomer mission was busted the ONE time I tried that race, so I deleted that character rather quickly.

Since then, I have been on pioneering games like NeverWinter Nights on AOL, the Shadows of Yserbius on Imagination Network, The Realm by Sierra on-line, and many of the popular games of today like EQ, UO, AC, AO, DAOC, COH, Jumpgate, EVE, EnB, and many others. One thing I like about this game is that there is a whole alien feel to the game. You are not in a typical fantasy like EQ and you're not quite in a futuristic human Sci-fi like EVE, EnB or AO. This game is quite refreshing and theres a sense of wonder and discovery. The artwork is fantastic and I hope the storyline will be the same. The game system may need a little work but it keeps you busy til you get involved with the plotline. I think there is potential here and I hope it will continue to grow into a popular and exciting RPG.
Will it survive WoW and EQ2? While both game impressed me with graphics and the new NPC speech, I am still not holding my breath that they will be the next big thing. I have many accounts in MMORPGs still active and as long as Ryzom keeps my interest, the account will remain active.
