Hello,
I'm a long-time EQer and have played several MMO's including L2 with a char at 42 in that game. I'm a bit taken aback by SoR thus far for the following reasons and am wondering if I'm just missing "it".
I remember playing EQ for the first time, and the game grabbed me right off the bat. The stupid little quests, getting leather armor, seeing High Hold Pass for the first time, etc. all had a sense of wonderment. L2 is just a beautiful game that is flawed by the community and the inablilty of the developers to controll the farmer, ebay cycle. But L2 was a great game when you had a good clan going. SoR doesn't have anything I can point to that I'm in love with. It looks good, but I'm not crazy about the UI or the way the world "acts" with you in it. It doesn't "move" right or something.
My question is this....how long do I stick with SoR before I know it's not for me. Because right now, it seems like such a foreign system, it's not much fun, really. I'm frustrated, because I had high hopes for this game. My character is only two days old and has achieved basic skills has done some crafting, has made a skill spell and made a power attack, etc. So I've touched upon the basics of the game, but I'm just not hooked. I don't think about playing the game again after I've quit. i don't feel any "addiction" brewing.
Is there something I'm missing or is this a game that truly does not grab you until "X" happens to you. If so, what is X and when will it occurr!! Lol, ok flame away, but hopefully someone will be sympathetic to my post.
Cheers

When I made my first set of armor out of stuff I had foraged myself, picking and choosing the ingredients based on what they offer, I knew I'd made the right choice.
When I got far enough along (only took a while), I started fiddling with creating my own custom actions. Now all of my actions are custom. I tweak them based on what I am doing at the moment. The level of customization goes beyond anything I've seen before, and I enjoy it. Not only can you customize your characters appearance, you can also customize their skill trees, the actions you take, and the armor and weapons you create -- EQ had almost none of this (you could choose your face and sex) and, though it held my attention for over 2 years, makes Ryzom seem like a 4th or 5th gen MMOG.
I'm really looking forward to what awaits our guild when we can begin guild quests (or whatever they're termed).
Re: New guy wondering when it gets good
It's hard to answer that. I think you probably should answer some questions first...
1) What is it about the game that got you excited before you started playing?
2) What is it about the game that you are finding boring?
3) What would make it exciting for you?

Ok, my question is this:
How come everyone who seems to have a dislike about the SoR immediately notes that they are/were an avid player of another MMO. What point does it really have? This is "Saga of Ryzom" it is not EQ, L2, SWG, WoW or any of the other games that you compare it to. It is a unique game with a unique experience to it and I believe it shoudl be taken as such; not rated off of other MMO's, because this is not those other MMO's.
That said, the game got more fun for me when I got to the Mainland and joined a guild.
Re: New guy wondering when it gets good
The game got really fun for me when i got to the mainland and started swimming the different lakes in Stryker land. There are all kinds of coves and hidden away places where a group could go hunt/harvest without having to worry about running into other people. Also there are hidden areas with real cool totems and structures.
I guess to answer your question...i really got excited about Ryzom when i came upon a cove that had a water fall and a totem hidden away behind a mountain. It was very exciting to discover that the makers of the game spent time putting little details and surprises in the game. I guess the exploration in the game excites me and keeps me playing the game.

Re: New guy wondering when it gets good
the comparison to other mmo's is relevant because they all follow the same basic concepts, even ryzom.
when someone makes the comparison, they're basically stating they aren't all wide-eyed with wonder because this isn't their first dance. i agree, i like it when someone gets passed all the 'oohs' and 'aahs' and tells me how it really is. i think that's what he's asking.
after playing several mmo's, people start to know what they want in this type of game regardless of the varied game mechanics.
as much as you want to believe ryzom is a unique experience, it really isn't. the presentation layer seems different, but the lower layers are all the same - level your char, craft some stuff, explore the area, group with others, join a guild.
to the original poster -
i think you should give it a week of hardcore playing and if you can still resist the crack pipe, then ryzom is probably not for you. having played everquest and knowing the ins and outs of mmo's, even if you feel ryzom's gameplay is totally different, you know in your gut when something pulls you in. i say trust that instinct.

Re: New guy wondering when it gets good
Takes some more time to get addicted. Give it a week or two. Make some friends. Team up. Ask for help from people if you need it. Build your character up and then go to the mainland. You'll have a great time once you get into the flow of things.
I only started playing because I was bored. Wasn't really hooked at first but now I love it.

Re: New guy wondering when it gets good
Going on what has already been said by Drech and the other I agree.
I think sometimes playing one particular game too long hampers an experience with a new one. You get used to a specific system a way of ding things. you know how the game runs and then switch to a new one and BAM it's all brand new. You have to learn a new system, new hunting spots. How everything works in general. I think for alot of folks it's just imply having to get used to what is different before you enjoy a new game as much as others. You have to be able to feel at home with system. As opposed to " oh god, this is way different how do i do yadda yadda here".
I think alot of times this is the case with games with more unique systems to them. The first few mmorpg's I played alot of the / commands were pretty much the same. Alot of the basics were about the same. So it wasn't too hard to adapt.
As more mmorpg's seek to set new standards for uniqueness and make their games stand out amongst the others the interfaces start becoming more different than they were with the first few games.
Even tho really they aren't too far of. you have to get used to the little quirks of each. Well except FFXI. That one is wayyy different from the others it seems.

Well this is pretty darn easy. If you think EQ "grabbed you" and that L2 is a "great game" then I assure you, Ryzom is not a game you will appreciate easily. For you, I am going to make a guess: You will need to find a good, big guild (CP or OOC are big guilds that I believe are multi-racial and have been around forever) and go on great hunts (Lots of named mobs around).
I could be very wrong, but considering where you came from... *shrug*
I would suggest looking at it from a different perspective, because the EQ/L2 perspective really isn't gonna help you out here.

Re: New guy wondering when it gets good
If you're looking for another cookie cutter MMO, please get in line for WoW or EQ2.
Ryzom isn't "complete" by any stretch of the imagination -- and thankfully so. Like really successful (over time) predecessor upstart MMOs with no money (eg: Mythic), SoR is trying to start small, capture your imagination and interest, and build on the game as they go.
This game is definitely not for everyone, and it doesn't try to be. It has a very European feeling to it, and is very different from most of the american and japanese games just on "feeling". I find this refreshing. Some find it odd, intimidating, and confusing. I get the sense that instead of trying to attact as many players as possible, they are looking to attact a very specific kind of player, and have that player be passionate about the game for a long time.
If so, this makes for a much better game community than 30,000 l33td00d Blizzard fanboys.
Anyway, in terms of "completeness", there are areas that are still being fine tuned. If you want your game "done" like, umm, Baldur's Gate "done", then this game isn't for you yet -- wait 6 mos and check back in.
