What is source mode, exactly?
What is source mode, exactly?
Could someone explain source mode for me? I've seen it range from as low as 0 to as high as 11, but have no idea what those numbers mean. It's not mentioned in the manual anywhere that I can see. I haven't been able to notice any effect it has on my harvesting. Has anyone else? Can you clue me in? It's a mild annoyance for me. Thanks.

Mode 11, and mode 14, I've only seen at the very start of harvesting. After I trained my first skill, I only got mode 0-5.yy48n19 wrote:Could someone explain source mode for me? Mode 1 seems the best. Mode 0 is a bit worse, with more frequent and more dangerous blow-ups.
Mode 2, 3, and 4 seem to reduce the life of the source unacceptable fast.
Mode 5 - I'm not sure.
Hope this helps,
Fitz
Re: What is source mode, exactly?
Lower modes slow the depletion of the Life and Danger bars. 0 is the best, 5 is the worst. You will only see modes over 10 while you are under level 10 Harvesting and with those, there is no depletion of Life or Danger.

I have to disagree.nihir wrote:Lower modes slow the depletion of the Life and Danger bars. 0 is the best, 5 is the worst.
I've found the blow-ups from mode 0 to be almost 2x as dangerous as the blow-ups from mode 1, at least in the borderlands.

Re: What is source mode, exactly?
The mode numbers have to do with exactly which attribute (healt or extraction risk) of the node is most effected by your extraction.
As you level and get new extraction abilities the effects of the modes change too. Meaning that it is impossilble to give a direct answer to this question, since it depends on what extraction bricks you are using while foraging.
I can say that mode 1 seems to be the best mode at any time (using any of the extraction bricks) up to level 150 (have not gotten past that so don't know if it changes or not after this). Mode 1 has the most stable health bar of all the modes, their extraction risk bar is very unstable, however at level 150 the most it has hit me for is 165hp per boom, np with 1000hp total.
Mode 0 has by far been the most painful mode over these levels, but I have yet to die from one explosion (don't let it go twice, definately wouldn't live).
Mode 2 has always been a bear in the health bar department, most of the time cannot even manage one from this mode. Have done it with some of the bricks though.
The rest of the modes have changed very often and I don't remember exactly what each did at any given time.
One thing you should know is that you will always have to keep an eye on the modes as you level and change the bricks in your extractions, since the modes change as you do so.
Good luck and keep diggin'.

Source mode numbers are related to effects they produce, each mode has different effects some listed in the previous post.
They are not sequential and they have no relationship with each other.
The source mode number is completely random (I have never seen a pattern)
Every time an action is applied to a source the mode is regrenerated, continuous actions do not effect the source mode. This may change after patch one.
Example...
Prospect....
Select source
Start extraction.
- Source mode randomises to say Mode 2
Hit the extraction action again
- Source mode randomises to say Mode 1
Leave the action running
- Source mode stays at Mode 1
If a second person applies a care plan to a source, this will also change the mode.
Prospect....
Select source
Start extraction.
- Source mode randomises to say Mode 2
Team mate appies care plan
Prospect....
Select source
Start extraction.
- Source mode randomises to say Mode 5
The action you use may have an effect on the possible mode types....
but based on so experimentation... I believe it has more to do with the material grade (basic, choice, etc) and the maximum quality (ql100 source)
In newbie island I was getting modes of 50 - which were very stable and durable.
On the main land I can't remember see any mode about 5.
Summary of source modes
mode 0 - unstable, medium damage explosions, good source life
mode 1 - stable, low damage explosions, very good source life (the best mode to get)
mode 2 - stable, medium damage explosions, very poor source life
mode 3 - unstable, high damage explosions, poor source life
mode 4 - unstable, very high damage explosions, poor source life
mode 5 - unstable, high damage explosions, very poor source life
Re: What is source mode, exactly?
borg9, I have found very similar patterns as those you have listed. I'm at work right now, or else I would post my findings on modes 0-5. Each different mode has different speeds at which health and explosion bars decrease. I ranked mine by fast, moderate, or slow decay in both categories. When I get home this evening I'll post my exact findings, but I can't remember them without looking at my notes. I have found very reliable characteristics for each mode.

You have never posted your notes )
What I have found (to be true only for myself and the nodes in Zora, tested only like 30 mins):
I never really understood the real difference between, say, Gentle Speed and Gentle Rate. Of course, you treat the source "more Gentle". "Rate" refers to quantity harvested per cycle and "Speed" to the lenght of a cycle.
Based on this, I'm assuming that for each source mode, there is something like an "Ideal Stanza". Correct?
Of course, using "All Gentle" works the best, but also eats the most focus. Maybe all of these thoughts become obsolete once I have huge focus and care plans, but who has enough focus? And care plans take time(1+ cycle of foraging less).
Ok, as it looks now (Speed/Rate/Quality):
Source Mode 0 - A/A/G ok!
A/A/A causes Explosion
Source Mode 1 - A/A/A ok!
Source Mode 2 - A/A/G ok!
A/A/A & G/G/A depletes source
Source Mode 3 - G/G/G ok!
A/A/A & G/G/A & A/A/G depletes the source
Source Mode 4 - G/G/A ok!
A/A/A & A/A/G depletes the source
Source Mode 5 -
A/A/A & G/G/A causes Explosion
"ok!" = I get no deplete and/or explosion before my source time runs out (which is 32.5secs).
---
I have not tried G/A/G and A/G/G yet, these might work for Mode 5 and/or 3 for better results.
Any thoughts?

All the modes changed after Patch 1.
I replied to you exact same post on the main forums.
Re: What is source mode, exactly?
Interesting experiment. Do we have more data?
I would confirm, however, that on higher level sources the mode that scares me the most is 0. Those explosions even under all-gentle are the only ones that have ever killed me at full hp.
