How to balance forage.

Post by rugster »

One of many ideas and undoubtably one being looked at.

When you get dp from melee you must use melee/magic gained xp to reduce the dp.

If you get dp from explosions then you must use forage to reduce the dp.

Atm, fighters are using harvestings to quickly reduce melee dp and this is being seen as an unfair advantage. Which it is. Also remove the multiplier from dp reduction. If you get 3k from a kill or harvest, then reduce dp by only 3k xp. OR reduce dp by 2k and give 1k xp to the players advancement.

Also remove the multiplier from dp reduction
"Nice idea".. Yesterday 3 death in 30 min = 400.000+ DP
Now i must kill 130 Glutt. Raspals to reduce DP to 0?
Then needed new "DP system" from ground, not just "remove multiplier".
Less power for mages!

Er.. A forager can also simply kill a bunch of suckling yubos to clear his DP fast & efficient. Where is the difference?

So, if I'm walking by and your source explodes, killing me then I have to forage to remove the dp? I don't have any foraging.

A very good point :-)

I personally like the fact that I can use any skill to remove DP, and my 'main' skill is foraging. There have been numerous occasions where I have died due to a forage source blowing and have immediately met up with friends to go and hunt.

In the given scenario I'd have to forage first to remove DP, then go hunting, or never receive any XP from any skill until I've foraged off the DP.

I must confess I don't see how this change would 'balance' foraging. Balance it against what exactly? Seems to me there are far too many threads these days along the lines of "they've broken my toy so I want everyone else's toys broken too".

I'm just waiting for someone to start whining about how there's no risk in crafting and they should have random blowups or some such nonsense - "Waaah, he just has to stand in front of a raw mat vendor and click 'make item' until level 250..."

And what about the people who have roughly the same level in melee as in foraging ? Isn't Rugsters proposed 'balancing' system a wee bit unfair to them ? The whole point of Ryzom is that you can train in whatever you want, so therefore you should be able to reduce DP in whatever fashion you want as well.

Dont die then. Or at least not more then once.

I do think it needs overhauled, but ask yourself this, what is the point of the multiplier? Take the multiplier out of the equation altogether. If it takes you 130 kills to remove dp, then something is wrong with melee dp. Harvesting dp only takes 2-3 harvests. Remove the multiplier from both the creation of the dp and the removal of it. It looks stupid. XX xp = xxxxx Xp you now have XXX dp. It should just be you have gained X xp, you now have X dp remaining.

This should be removed from the game. It can be exploited.

I think the harvest xp system highlights the rubbish melee xp system.* The problem is, people are using an easy xp removal system to lower dp rapidly. Whilst non ex beta are finding out the hard way that to be a high level melee/magic user, you must also be a harvester. I would call this exploitation. Those the use this system to this end probably disagree, those that dont, probably agree.

I think the truth of it is staring everyone in the face, all you need to do is open your eyes. And of course, you'd have to be able to admit what is obvious. This is the real problem here, people prefer to flame, because flaming doesnt require you to think.

*I think it isnt so much that the gaining of melee xp is bad, but the rate of level rise from the gained xp is bad. It should not require more time for a melee or magic user player to remove a set amount of dp then it would take a crafter or harvester.

The difference is, that this would force a harvester to be melee. A melee is already being forrced to be a harvester to clear dp rapidly. The harvester isnt being forced to be a melee, he doesnt need to kill yubos.

Which would you prefer? 2 hours melee for no xp and probably no mats. Or 15 mins of no xp and two dozen mats which you can sell.
