I voted yes.

The problem as others have said is not the game mechanics.
It has everything to do with how we implement it.

The ones of us old enough to remember the old days should try to teach the younger ones that faction doesn't rule supreme. This is one issue I have with the current status though. The last edict signed by the four nation leaders claim just that. My belief is that Wyler did a grave error when the last thing he did was sign that edict, and the other leaders signed it in his honour. How bad can it get?

I would rather see us all return to respecting each other, no matter if it's a "friend or foe". We should place friendship first (after all, that's what keeps many of us still playing). And I know there are great homins on any side, be it kami, karavan or neutral :)

Despite everything, i actually dont mind the current incarnation of PvP in Ryzom. Mostly because it isnt obtrusive, we can avoid it if we want to, and this does include choosing not to enter Nexus/Lands of Umbra.
There arent any mechanisms to enforce a fair fight, which is a bit rough for the underdogs, but excessive interference would not be good for the game either.
My contention all along is that PvP is not the heart of Ryzom - but as a subgame within the saga it is adequate. If I wanted serious PvP i would still be playing Unreal Tournament, or Battlefield or Counterstrike etc.

There are areas where it can be improved, so many suggestions have been made the good ones are lost in the crowd :p

But the important thing is not to force people to do it if its not what they want. Keep the players free to do what they enjoy.

Ryzom started out as a glorious vision of rebuilding a shattered world, but died as just another sordid little two sided squabble :(

i would like to see finally chat channels for defenders and attackers.
and currently i doubt that the ability for everyone to rez someone does good to pvp. it's great in pve but big annoying if you have to kill same person 100 times a night.
also there is a bug that makes me impossible to find the person shooting at me even when i can read the name in sys info.

Had to vote no, not because of being anti-pvp far from it, I think the current PvP inplimentation isnt a bad compromise.

People are mostly fighting by faction only when its becoming more and more clear the sides are nothing to do with faction but just who wants to win. (human nature to some extent but not good for ongoing MMORPG balance)

This is evident by the number of people switching sides and one side yelling die Kami when attacking a Karavan OP.

This entire effect has been snowballed by alot of people sick of it switching to Cho.

All this leading to a near hopeless imbalance and my No vote.

Please no, your not as karavan as I am, comments or, why dont you go to Cho or leave, remember this is a forum and the above is my opinion.

I voted yes, I like to know there are 'dangerous' areas that force me to be more careful. And being hunted by another player is something no PvE coding can match.
There will never be a 'happy' or 'friendly' PvP environment because it appeals to the competitive nature of people.
The problem with PvP is rarely caused by game mechanics, but the fact that is appeals to demography of people I would not associate with normally.
But this is the nature of online gaming, I accept to mix with different cultures and 'standards'................And as long as the lunatics don't run the asylum I can accept this aspect of gaming.

Hi all

Long time since I have been here... Hello to my old friends! /hug Rushin + Samsara + Evo etc etc

I will vote no

Mainly because the effect of PvP has lead to me leaving this game. I loved the community before the faction fighting. People on both sides used to cooperate and be friendly.

Outposts were also billed as something that was going to be for guilds to battle for. However as it turned out it turned into faction monopolisation.

It was a game mechanic failure as the fact that the kami and karavan could cross-communicate ingame lead to flaming and bitterness. The only way that this could have worked well (in my mind) would be if the 2 factions couldn't communicate. However that is a double edged sword and would have also taken the community spirit.... Tough situation!!

I haven't been in ryzom for ages now though so Im unaware of any recent changes.

Love you all and I may be back soon - i'm always considering my return...

rushin wrote:yeah, yeah i know.. its a forum you are all free to discuss so go ahead.

The thing is it would be nice to have an intelligent conversation as a group of players about a better PvP system (better for everyone obviously) but after watching every single thread that even briefly mentions PvP crash and burn i dont have a lot of hope so am just asking a simple question /

and i know 'working' is hardly a great word, acceptable? fair? making factions and PvP fun? you get the idea ;)
In my opinion, the faction PvP is fine, the mechanics of the Outpost PvP are OK. I still have some problems with some of the implementation of the Outpost battles: Having to turn up to the OP hours before to camp it is certainly not my idea of fun  It would be fine in the 'real world' but I don't have time to do this and it takes time away from the digging ;) However, the actual PvP during the battles is no problem.

All other things being equal, numerical superiority will always win. Then morale is key, to garner support and bring more people to your side, and game mechanics will never play any part in that, will they? Game mechanics do play a big part in allowing tactics, organization and smarts to triumph over numbers, and I think everyone would like to see these factors given as much potential as possible. I've seen groups like Infinity and the Knights destroy much greater numbers of opposition (shudders at the memories ;) ), which leads me to think that Ryzom mechanics are pretty good. Are there any little features of the game mechanics that could be changed to improve this situation?

P.S. Heya Ali. And Thomas! :D

I didn't vote at all.

As for the question asked, working for who?

If it is directed at the players then in my opinion it is most certainly not working. All the points raised about differences in lvl, attacker/defender numbers, distance to respawn points etc are all valid arguements for a no.

If you look at it from a developers point of view though it is probably working exactly as intended.

For a start not all the OP were opened (a cause for conflict).

Most guilds want an OP (a cause for conflict).

All OP lvls and mats are different (a cause for conflict, not every guild will be happy getting Q 50 cats and OP mats for ever, if any).

I'm sure there are more points but i've had enough of typing.

The down sides to this are that if a larger faction continually win the smaller faction will leave. Not a good thing for the game numbers or the players left. Also because of the differences mentioned tempers get frayed and insults get thrown.

We are supposed to be a game with grown up attitudes but sometimes you would have trouble seeing it reading region chat/ watching aggro pulling/ spawn camping. "Do unto others..." as the saying goes, which is a never ending arguement until we are big enough to see it.

Ryzom is what we choose to make it as a community. As I, like most, have friends on both sides of the divide, I would like to think they wouldn't think less of me for aligning with a faction I chose over two years ago in a game. But I can also see things can't go on as they are at present if the game is to keep it's disillusioned Kami members. Being in an all powerful faction is not where I want to be.

And remember, that while the Kami are here and holding their own the Karavan aren't all powerfull and you're not having to fight guilds of your own faction. :D
