Re: free ryzom?
I've been through this kind of thing before: I remember coming in to work and being told I wasn't going to get paid for the last 2 weeks, the money ran out. The company folded, and I didn't get paid. Nobody bought it. However, 6 months later, I did finally get my pay, after they had sold the IP (Intellectual Property) of the company.
So, I see these as the most likely outcomes:
1) another company buys Nevrax, and keeps the game going. This is by far the best outcome, and the most likely. We of course would not know about any negotiations until the end.
2) nobody buys the company, and the Court sells off the assets to the highest bidders. The source code of the game is sold, and Ryzom as a game is gone. I think this is what will happen if no-one buys Nevrax.
3) some group of individuals makes a bid for Ryzom. I think the money amount they try to offer will be way too low, so the Court will dismiss the offer. If the offer does go through, then Ryzom will still be going, but at a hugely lower stability, speed, and support. Not a good outcome. Servers, bandwidth, and support (both game and account support) costs money, and unpaid volunteers will not be nearly as good as what we are used to now.
4) Ryzom goes "open source". This is extremely unlikely IMHO. That would mean the Court just throws away the code, or accepts the bid from #3 above, and the code is made open. This means Ryzom will limp along, and again the support, stability, and speed are greatly reduced. Many variants arise as people start making their own servers, and the game dissolves into a "community project".
Open source people often forget that there is a big difference between development and operations. Take Mozilla for example, or Linux. These are software development projects, and even I can contribute since my home platform is good enough to do development. No money is involved, and support is community, in the form of email lists, websites, etc.
Operations, however, involve money, for servers, bandwidth, and support. Linux does not consume electricity and bandwidth, but massive servers to support world-wide operations do. Full time support people, account support people, hosting, all costs real money, month after month. There will be no "free" Ryzom in the real sense.
If the game does go open source, I will create my own server, and play solo, since I love the game However, the chances that open source "free" Ryzom could approach a real MMORPG is remote I think.

The sole detailed and reliable "next step" information at our disposal being : a full disclosure, the rizom project or an unknown plan with an unknown company(ies)... these are the 3 solutions known at 100%.
Under such cirumstances, I chose the Ryzom project, you don't... simple.
So having all the information in your hands...
Tell us who the investors are (all of them).

No, really? I think you should read the .org just a bit more.olepi wrote:Operations, however, involve money, for servers, bandwidth, and support.

That would be because you subbed after Xavier had 'left' Nevrax, with the players account names (publc) and emails (private) information.
Re: free ryzom?
I re-read the .org statement, there was nothing about who pays for the servers, support, and bandwidth. It is all about buying the source code and developing it as a community project. This is the standard open source approach. It works well for development.kaetemi wrote:You want to know what around 90% of the current CSR team are?No, really? edit: I missed the budget the first time. There is nothing in it about support staff, and the estimates go up to only 2,000 players. That is a very small MMORPG.
As for operations, here is a snippet from Nevrax.org from October:
"The Nevrax.org server is back from a several day unavailability. Please accept our apologies for this disruption.
The lucky ones who had bookmarked ftp://ftp.another.org/pub/nevrax.org/snapshots/ still had access to recent NeL snapshots. Another contact channel for the community that remained open was the irc chat #nel on irc.freenode.net."
Ok, that was a SEVERAL DAY OUTAGE. If Ryzom goes open source, that is the kind of service you will see.

Re: free ryzom?
Borg,
Are you playing it or is it a birth gift?
what don't you understand in "unknown"? How the hell can I give information about unknown? That's precisely this unknown state that makes me chose Ryzom.org over the 2 other solution (ie: the death or the unknown futur). So again, what the hell are you pointing out here?
Picture this: the next presidential election are coming, few days before you make your choice, you realise that you know 3 things:
1- The former president will not apply
2- A Candidate, with little political support but a fully detailled strategy applies.
3- 2 or more candidates are applying but prefer to remain anonymous and to chose to keep their Presidential policy secret.
The same day, CNN asks you to vote their opinion poll:
- Nothing (aka ryzom death)
- The newbie (Ryzom.org)
- John & Jane Doe (our famous unknown investors)
What I'm saying is my vote, on this particular CNN poll would be "The newbie".. cause that's better than nothing or the unknown.
Ok, you prolly have understood now (if not I can't help ya) that we got no idea of who these investors are and that's something to keep in mind: of course, these could be Bethesda, Vivendi or Ubisoft.. and that should be a good new, but they might also be NCsoft (loool) or SOE and that should be a not so good news..
Or they might also be an random investment company, only here to make money over the dead body of Nevrax: it happens a lot.. and that would be definitely a terrible news.
Hope this helps.

So in other words YOU don't have all the info to make an informed decision.
