If someone serious enough is willing to do it - YES, I think its a great idea!

Many of the worlds greatest software are free and there is nothing saying SoR could not be too. It all depends on "who", "what" and "when".

This gang seems serious enough, so my vote is naturally a big YES!

Seren, your concerns are naturally justified and before supporting the idea one should let his/here's own judgement decide. Some other thoughts, see this link...

Things developed for free get pushed to the back burner, lamenting their wasted potential.

Id rather pay 20 dollars a month and have a well-developed game with additional content, and bug-fixes.

Let me add here few comments to this misguided thread.

- First your poll is a little misguided, the Ryzom.org is not about a Free ryzom but to make it Open Source.
Open source doesn't mean necessarily free: we surelly will have to pay a mnthly fee to access to the main server(s).. of course you'll be able to create your own private one.. to the cost of a smaller population, instability, connexion issues,etc..

Maybe your private server will be more stable, more populated than those from this association.. well that's the beauty of it: nothing will prevent you to de a better job, in terms of competition, that's something interesting. If your solution would be better.. ppl will join you, until then they'll prolly stick to the "monthly server" ;)

- Second, the way you've turned the question is subtle.. I dunno if you notice it yourself though.
You are asking if Ryzom.org is in the absolute, Teh Best Solution - (tm)!

Of course it's not
: most of us would rather have a big and loving company fully dedicated to the game and its player base to do such job. To me the best solution would be a private investor, full of billions of Dollars, completely closed to the notion of "return on investment" whose sole purpose would be to fullfill the desire of the community: this my friend would definitely be Teh Best Solution - (tm)! Now you can easily understand why, I would vote "No -ryzom.org is not Teh Best Solution - (tm)! ;)

Now let me remind you something very important: Until further notice, Ryzom.org isThe Only Official Competitor (tm)!
The so-called "big companies" willing to buy Ryzom have not been heard.. they're just "rumors on a forum post, 2 lines in the official news.. Let me restate this loud and clearly: NO NAMES AND ABOSLUTELY NO PLANS OFFICIALY EXIST BUT THE ONE OF RYZOM.ORG : legally, these "big companies" do not exist. Guys, it's time to wake-up and realise that you're currently saying "no" to the only solution available.. as of Sunday the 3rd of December 2006.. 2 frakin day before the limit!!

With this in mind, the question is no longer "if Ryzom.org is Teh Best Solution - (tm)?" the question now is: "between a full dismantle of Nevrax and its Assets by the French administration or the Only Official Solution coming out from the association Ryzom.org: which one do you prefer?"

Now, if you are asking me who I will chose between an association regrouping some ex-Nevrax dev/ryzom creators + Actual Players fans.. or an uknown random investissor.. my choice is kinda easy. ;)

Third point: Be gratefull that such project exist.. simply for the Publicity it creates.
These people already won our support, why? Well it's simple: with them in the competiton, we now can be sure that any other actor willing to buy the game will have to show at last a plan as good as they are giving.

I'd rather now be sure that there will be some competition to get Ryzom.. that I will not see a fukin investment company buying the game for 1 Euro (it can happen in France, when the debts are higher than the assets and not many competitors are in the fight). Because like all of you, I am convince that Ryzom deserves better than to be ripped off like that. Let me also finished by mentionning the tremendous publicity their project has given to Ryzom: many press magazines started to talk about Nevrax's position only because of this project.

So long for those who would have loved to see Nevrax and Ryzom being sold or ripped-off anonymously.. in the dark. ;)

With this in mind: you'd be crazy or suicidal not to support such project, even if it won't happen.. at last it will force our famous "invisible Big companies" to really think about Ryzom and define a long term strategy.

I must disagree. If an official release says there are companies negotiating, then they exist. If they dont exist, the french authorities will take the best available offer, IE Xaviers little organisation, wether it offers a million euros, or 50 cents and a packet of chewing gum.

Lets try and remain calm shall we? Your post is a little sensationalist, we really don't need anyone getting more upset.

Nevrax, from the day I know it, until this day, has show a perfect ethic. I never take them in sensacionalism, or in a lie. This is very strange in a company. I really doubt that in his last days they'll start liying. They say there are competitors, so I really believe there are competitors.

In the other hand, Ryzom.org has begun with a very doubful ethic, with all the matter of the mail-list stolen and so on. And with a certain degree of sensacionalism.

But, after all, the poll speak volumes.

I really don't want this kind of publicity. This project are making a name in the Free Soft worl for a number of people, and is throwing Ryzom in a huge FUD. The support they have is not the community support. Then, they're making like Luis XIV: All for the community, but without the community.

I don't think so. This project and his supporters seems very "amateur". They are making bad mistakes. I really don't think they have even a little choice... They'll present in the court with a lot of pledges, no one know how many of that money will become real cash? A bank will support it? (In Europe that is harder than in USA).

By the way, the project is about making it Free Software, not open source. It'll become GPL, what is Free Software, not open source. Richard Stallman, the GPL fouder, tell that "Open Source" is a term used by companies to distract people from the real objective of the Free Software. So, I'm sorry, but "Free Software" is totally right. Open Source is another kind of licenses, like the MIT Licence, the BSD Licence or the SharedSource License, that, in Richard Stallman words "Don't protect our liberties" (sic).

Sensasionalism.. how do you come-up with this one.. I don't know really?

My post in no way is implying that Nevrax is liying or not to us, I don't even question their actions. What I had stated and will re-state here is a simple fact: so far, there is no other official competitor than Ryzom.org.

In a journalistic point of view, a news for example on CNN, would describe the situation today as: there is one official buyer, Ryzom.org and rumors related to other investments. As much as I like Nevrax (I got nothing but good experiences with them), I must in that regard keep the fact out of the "beliefs":

Facts:
- Every account's payments have been suspended, no new account can be created.
- Ryzom.org is the only buyer officially in the run... AS OF TODAY, sunday 03.12.
- The only official mention of other competitors is the following: "several companies and/or individuals are actively engaged in negotiations to take over Ryzom."

Belief:
- Nevrax has never lied to you (I'm too new to agree/disagree with this) so they most likely not lie with their "negotiations to take over Ryzom".
- I believe that most competitors remain secret to buy the game the cheapest possible.

must disagree. If an official release says there are companies negotiating, then they exist. If they dont exist, the french authorities will take the best available offer, IE Xaviers little organisation, wether it offers a million euros, or 50 cents and a packet of chewing gum.

Correct me if I'm wrong , but I believe (hehe) that it's not how the decision process is done, at last in France: there is a legal date, the 5th of December.. competitors have the until this moment to make a public offer.

Nothing can be settled before, ie: the Judge cannot give anything or even start to decide right now what he will do.
