Prospecting messages - logical bug?

Post by apziro »

Last night as I was harvesting, I was boggled by particularly one message I got a lot, which seemed logically flawed. The message was:

"Some matching raw materials were found nearby, though."

... which looks alot like messages seen on several other occasions, except usually, you get something like "No materials of the specified class[...]" in front.

Every time I encountered this message, I was using a prospect action with a raw material filter stanza (prospecting for seeds to be specific), usually coupled with a better materials stanza. A lot of experimenting has led me to the suspicion that this bug is related to finding a depleted source, or a seasonal source when off-season, probably coupled with other valid and available sources of same type but different class.
This theory is based on encountering the mentioned bugged message, while performing a Choice Seed prospection, then getting a "Wrong class but matches nearby" on Basic Seed and Fine Seed prospection, and finally "Unavailable this season" when trying a non-type-specific Choice prospect, and when I tried to confirm at another "bugged" location, same result, only "source seems depleted", instead of off-season, with unfiltered Choice.

I am guessing the cause is a logical bug when applying the filters to a prospect action.

So, what I want to know is this:
Does anyone else have similair experiences? Is it perhaps a well known issue? And since I'm quite a newb, there's also the possibility that it was a temporary issue, just by chance happening on my first mainland prospecting session...

It still occurs at high levels, but when it does I look around a bit more and usually find what Im after. As far as i know its just a positional error.

Yeah, I don't think there's any bug there. What you're prospecting for isn't exactly in that location, but look around and it can definitely be found close by.

It's quite possible that it's not bugged as far as whether or not I'm actually supposed to find materials or not, but the message itself is grammatically incorrect (in ending with a "though" without a previous statement).

Not that I'm gonna declare a flame war over a grammatical error, but I'm curious as to whether or not I'm missing out on additional information that might be helpful. If there's simply nothing to be had at that location, but nearby, I would think it would at the very least say:
"No specified raw materials were found. Some matching raw materials were found nearby, though."

*g* And that´s exactly what it states normally. Look closely, sometimes this massage appears in full. I had the same thing happen to my prospecting a few times and I suspect it´s simply some form of coding error regarding the sentence displayed. It´s cut in half, so to say.
So keep looking, sometimes a simple turn helps you find what you´re looking for.

That's exactly why I was suspecting some sorta special circumstances regarding this message ;) Especially considering that this message will appear repeatedly if you continue to perform the same prospection action of the same area.

Coding error = bug (I originally posted this in tech forum, but it was moved here).
So long as it's just the text display that suffers from this, all is swell. But being a programmer myself, I would assume that the text outputter and the actual "materiel generator" *may* share a fair bit of logic in this case.
And in either case, I'm just that curious kinda person who would like to see what the hidden half says...

But ok, I gather I should just keep my chin up and keep prospecting when this happens to me.

Thanks for the feedback!

Two situations:

First, you are looking for a specific material, but there is a different material source nearby (most likely of the same type but different grade?): "Some matching raw materials were found nearby, though." (Or however it appears on its own - it's been a while since I've gone prospecting new areas.)

Second, you are looking for a specific material, and there are NO other sources in the area: "No specified raw materials were found. Some matching raw materials were found nearby, though."

And just as a point of additional input, I was prospecting an area in the Void and encountered an area where I was trying to find seeds and received the "nearby" message. "Nearby" ended up being almost 100m away.

Apologies if I've been redundant here.

That's actually more likely what's happened, from some perspectives, it's not as much a bug as an incomplete on its own sentence, when you fall through one branch of the logic, they simply forgot to specify a string for the first 'error' condition, and applied rightly the second sentence.

There's a few things on Atys that suffer from the fact that the authors of the code don't speak English, and have no clue what a 'fragment' is (in terms of English).

It could be the original French makes sense as written, and translation is just simply too literal, leaving a partially correct sentence as a 'clue' as to what is happening.

There should be an inserted sentence something like 'The materials you have located in this area do not match your current prospecting action.', before 'Some specified materials were found nearby, though.'

I particularly like when 'Vous interrupt the stalking stinga' :D

This is still a bug just as much as if the server crashed because of it, the mod who moved the post didn't realise that because they're likely not very technical (or think they're more technical than they are). But, c'est la vie, it's not a bug that's likely to get addressed, not when there's still bugs that do cause crashes in the ring, and strangeness like the 'random team' bug lurking out there.
