HEY WHAT"S GOING ON WITH THE SERVER?!?

Post by jdomack »

OK, I understand that the server was supposed to go down briefly this morning at (AHEM!) 6:30 EST. Well, I don't know about 6:30, but at 8:30 EST I got a message thatthe server was coming down for reboot. About 20 minutes later, it finally let me back on, only to rudely disconnect me several times with no warning, and each time rolling me back to before the announced reboot. What's going on here? Is there some NEW problem with the newest patch? I am anxiously awaiting answers here as I like this games very much, but I would actually like to be able to play it sometime....

Thanks in advance.

<soulsnat> there was something in that last patch that has caused a bit of a complication - the fix is being sorted out now ansd the shards will be back up as soon as humanly possible (or asw close as coders get to being human)

From what you said it seems like they obviously are having some problems with the patch today.. do you really need to ask? They have taken the server down again to correct the problem it appears....

Exactly. When I want to go bowling say, and the lanes are closed for maintenance, I just find something else to do for a while :P

Sounds like nothing new to me =p. Just another dev screw up. You guys should be used to those by now. Us closed beta people sure are. = p
If they say the server going to be down for 10 mins you should exspect it to be down for *cough* 2 hours. Some times more. I remember way back when. A breif reset was a brief 4 hours =p, or if you were lucky you got to play for 15 mins befor the server crashed again. Those were the days when this game was awsome! befor they went and made chanegs for good! & bad = (

I said in the ryzom chat that they might want to post something in the forums... but the response was "I'm waiting to see whats happening".

I think a post saying, "SERVERS ARE DOWN" and the body being "There's a bug and we'll update the status here as soon as more information becomes available" would be sufficient.

Instead we will get people flaming on the forums...

PS: Don't they test these things before launching them live? I mean I can see a bug that does something innocous, or something that people won't encounter all the time... but the server crashing? That's a pretty obvious bug...

Not really trying to flame here, just pointing out the obvoius = p. you think they would test theese sort of things. Coding can be a big pain in arse! I know i've been coding for years. A small little typo could set you back for hours. especially if its one of theese } or one of theese { or and IF or and Else stament. granted a simple syntax error should dispaly in the console on server load up . Sometimes you just have a % or variable named wrong. that sends a function into a bad loop. I did noticed when i logged back infor a breif moment. My guild apeared to be whiped. i was the only person in the info screen. Maybe they just forget to execute a function or put an END, Return statment in. who knows!

For some reason unbeknownst to me, the guild list only populates as your guild members log on. Evidently pulling up a list from the database is too hard of a job for the server (heavy sarcasm), so instead it creates one by checking peoples guild allegiances when they enter the game and then adding them to a list.

Also there are a lot of really wierd things that happened since the last patch, people quitting the team are getting refered to either as a reference ID or a memory address instead of their players name for instance. Also I've seen this happen randomly with a few other objects in the system info display.

Anyway, there is a lot of wierd behavior in the game that looks like minor bugs that either the developers cannot be arsed to fix, or did not test sufficiently before releasing the patch. The trade bug that was introduced in this last patch is a glaringly obvious one. How can you not notice that you cannot trade with someone? Out of the very small population in Tryker which never averages more than 20 players in the main region even during prime-time, it only took a matter of minutes for someone to encounter this bug.

I write software for the financial services industry and you gotta believe we test the heck out of anything we develop since a serious bug can cost millions of dollars to our customers. Ryzom isn't quite as critical as that, so I don't expect everything to be absolutely *flawless* - however the entire episode from last night and today seems very amauterish.
