You spawn at the feet of Chiang the Strong. If you talk to him he tells you to go around the area and talk to the other NPCs.

An elaboration from a couple posts up about there being no quests on the mainland...there are I have been led to believe, quests, but mainly for faction with Kami/Karavan or tribes, for faction standing and bits of historical knowledge (Rites) but not in the quest sense of do this quest and I'll give you this magic sword. Starter area is the initial gearing up and after that it is mainly fighting, selling, making, harvesting and making your way in the world.

Ok I read that PDF comic and one thing I picked up on I am worried about is anything I train in I can't unlearn. To get the new skills I am useing my skill points, spent is spent. You say there is no wrong way to make a char... are you sure about that?

Yep

If you find out you want something you don't have, get a few more levels and train it. There are enough skill points in the game to learn all skills, eventually.

the mainland has almost no quests.
No, no, no, no. This drives me absolutely nuts when people say this.

I can run through Yrkanis in less than 5 minutes and FILL my mission log and still be able to find several more npcs with tasks for me to do.

The greeter for the city has over a dozen. Three Corporals in the city have the same. The Karavan have them. The Kami have them. Yes, these are largely for fame with the races and factions, but there is no reason you cannot incorporate them into your roleplaying (I do). Also, many of them give dapper rewards. Some of them can be repetitive in nature (Killing 4 gingos in a time limit, while also having one to kill 5 gingo and 5 ragus, for example), but as their difficulty increases, so does the pay out.

There are not any super-story-linked quests like in Silan, but there are hundreds upon hundreds of quests to do. The Encyclopedia quests are speckled through out the standard quests, so unless you have a guide telling you exactly which quest to do, the only way to find them is to do random quests. (I've completed one whole amber cube, besides the initial guide quest that explains them.)

Gah, okay I'm better now.

The mainland has more quests than you should shake a stick at. ...that'd be a lot of stick shaking.

I too was worried about not having enough skill points but a Seracii has said there are enough points to get all of the skills as a matter of fact from what I've heard there are more skill points than skills! So no worries and have fun :)

I tend to believe it's safer to say there are no quests, because what is there are simple tasks, not even missions really. :) Calling them quests gives a wrong idea of their nature.

I suppose this question will garner a whole slew of answers, so be prepared for some reading... :)

It's a matter of perspective. In other games, quest heavy games, the point of quests is to build/level your character more quickly for reaching the end-game. (I'm not as extensively immersed in other MMO's as some here, and speak from limited experience). However, in reality, even the quests are grinds.

Ryzom is, to me at least, a form of escapism. After a long grueling day of dealing with irrate customers (aka idiots), I wanna just sit back and explore a whole new world. I have no desire to be told collect 14 horse hoofs, and deliver them to so and so. I have no desire to be told to go kill 20 of some such monster, then report back. I want to do what I want to do, when I want to do it.

I want to be part of the living world, interact socially with others of the same mindset, perhaps go hunt a few beasties for the thrill of the chase. I want to learn that new pattern to craft a better armor to sell to my fellow homins. I want to be in control of my own in-game destiny.

That is what Ryzom is to me. Some may think it's boring, but to me, it's the perfect form of relaxing escapism. Can you grind? Sure, you can do anything you want here. As I said, it's all matter of perspective.

Level as fast as you want, or take your time and enjoy the world and the other homins that are here with you.

jamesl wrote:I have been playing this game for 35 min to find out the newb area does not give me the info I need on how to start out. That’s on the forums and other URL's. If I need to train from the start to be effective why do I need to spend 20 min to go looking for the trainer? Why don’t I start there with some info on picking a path? Your game maybe awesome but getting people hooked should take no more then 5-10 min. Ryzom's newb area NEEDS allot of work!

Well, just be patient please.
You won´t learn Tennis, Billard, Painting or any other RL-FUN-Activity in 30 minutes. Appart from some cardgames maybe, but NO MMO´s a cardgame.
(OK, there are CCG´s as Merchandise Spinnofs :p but I don´t mean that in the litteral sense. ;) :)
Just keep trying and if you realy find it´s not your game, then it was kinda nice to have met you :)

Have Fun wherever you may come to play next. :)
