hi all,

The other day I had a large debate ingame about this idea and thought it best to discuss it here.

Basically I am thinking of making a complete map of Silan, highlighting where all the materials can be found, types and quality as well as where most of the monsters and NPCs etc can be found. I know Ballistic has a partial map and so does Ryzom database, but not one in jpg version highlighting all the different areas where materials can be found.

What I would like is your opinions. So far I have had the following arguments:

For - Yes its a great idea, it takes hours sometimes finding the material I am after and a map would be very useful.
Con - Ruins the fun of finding it yourself. Too many to list all on one map.

Alot were saying they knew where most the materials could be found but they didn't want to share. However I feel that sharing knowledge is essential, what is the point otherwise. Let me give you an analogy, if I had one idea, and you had one idea and we shared ideas, we would each have two ideas. However if we didn't share ideas, we would each still only have one idea. Which is better?? I think the former is.

I see no reason why someone shouldn't make such a map. Those that don't want to ruin the fun of finding things can simply not look at the map. :D

one thing i like about Ryzom is the lack of guides and maps and spoilers and 'do these 29 things for a perfect character advancement' Without them the focus stays ingame. People ask around or join guilds where master harvesters or fighters will take out younger ones and pass on the knowledge..

It's all about community, the lack of item drops reinforces this, you have to talk to people, make friends, do some deals to achieve things and the same goes for general information.

having said all that there are a couple of sites that list all this this stuff for the mainland so it's probably not a bad idea. Just in my mind it's nicer if someone shows you and you get a new contact in your friends list :)

A single map with everything on it? No. A site to search for something specific? Yes, that can be valuable :) Silan is a single region with so many players, I'd rather not see a resource that is quicker to use than Region chat, and a one-stop map is exactly that.

I already maintain a gaming website, cannot maintain two on the go, plus i don't make sites which have already been done, I like to be different, offer something that hasn't been offered before.

I don't see how this could be harmful. The only thing I would advise you not to put on there are excellent and supreme materials. Since they are weather/season/daylight dependent and I'm sure many master harvesters would prefer those kept secret. And in this I agree. That kind of knowledge is really something you should only acquire from a guildmate or a friend.

Otherwise, I see no problem in seeing a map with virtually everything on it. If people don't want to use it, fine they don't have to. While I see that this could create a breed of speedy gamers that "know everything," I also see it as a way to assist casual gamers who might only have an hour or two to play after work and need to pull up a general location for a material or whatever. (Actually, I think it'd be more benefitial if when you place a dot on the map for a group of materials and npcs, you placed a large dot in the general vicinity instead of a million ones for individual things. That way people would still have to search, but not be sent running around say the entirety of Yrkanis clicking on every npc they see.)

These are not found on Silan anyway.

I am totally for this and as someone said earlier (Too lazy to look) if you don't want to ruin the experience, don't look at the map.

Like Rushin, i am as surprised as delighted that there are still some secrets kept well in this game... would really hate to see a jewel/amps recipe spoiler site.
OTOH as a look into universe channel shows, frustration about certain quests on Silan can be high, and i see no reason to be too strict with those that are new to the game and still struggle with things we guys take for granted.... assebling a stanza, finding out mob behavior, popping resources we are looking for, etc etc etc.
