I switched to no eax, hardware sound 16 tracks, and it seems more stable tonight, two assertions that didn't crash the game before an access violation that did.

I'll keep playing with the settings, will try opengl tomorrow, it's currently on auto.

How do you have your graphics settings configured? If you have them set on high, try turning a few things down.

I had a problem recently where I would regularly crash if I used Alt-Tab to switch to another program. Ryzom would bin out. I switched to windowed mode and the problem went away. It's a bit of a pain but no show stopper. ;)

I was very skeptical about there being a hardware problem, my machine doesn't act strangely or anything and other apps, including games, run fine. And my experience has been that when something crashes, it's most likely an application problem, or more rarely a driver problem.

But I downloaded and ran this, and OMG! In 35 minutes of testing, this program saw 5 1-bit errors, starting with the 5th and 6th tests run. That's a low error rate considering how fast computers are these days, and data specific, but it's definitely nonzero. I'll reseat the sticks and maybe swap them out with another computer and redo the test, but I guess I can't point the finger at the ryzom client if memory is acting up.

Now I know why servers use ECC memory.

Well, the memory was definitely the problem, after some twiddling I got the machine to pass the memory test, and ran several hours last night without any crashes.

Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions - and see you all on the mainland!
