After playing for the past two days this game to me feels like Asherons Call, my first MMORPG and a classic first gen game.
The diffrences in the two are numerous but it is a feeling I get when I play SoR. I can not put a finger on it exactly but this is what I feel when I play. Let me say for me it is a very good thing. Plus it harkens me back to my SWG days of open-endedness.
I have been reading numerous posts here and on the official site. I realize that the Island I am becomming accustomed to is not the norm on the level of how the quests are given on the mainland. But to me what I see is a trend for the future. If it can be done for the starter island I can see the possibility of the quests eventually spreading into the mainlands.
Here is what I have seen in two days (Yes a short time but they have left some rather large impressions)
1. A world that feels alive. There is not a feeling of static sameness anywhere. The sounds and the change of weather/time of day is spectullar.
2. AI that feels alive. I have not seen mobs act like this since SWG. They are constantly walking up to me and just checking me out. I will not discuss me running for my life the first time I cam across a carnivore hostile mob and it made a very rude noise then rushed me. I got myself killed just because I stood there in amazement. It really adds to the feeling that I am in a living world.
3. The ability to do anything...really. Not being slotted into a role forever unless I reroll a new class is very refreshing.
4. Honest mature players. Even in the newb zone people are helpful and seem very nice. A very welcome change from the community of uber peen WoW kids I have become so used to.
There is much more that I have felt and noticed in playing and I think that soon I will be upgrading my account. I do have a couple questions though.
What are the costs of mounts/packmounts/apartments? Will it take me a month or more to be able to earn enough to purchase one?
I see the game is very RP centric, I have next to no knowledge about the lore of the game, how hard it is to find a guild that is active and helpful/understanding?
If I decide to make the leap into the game in full down the road what will be the cost to me? I know the sub fee and how much it costs but is there a fee for the game itself or do I just upgrade and blammo I am GTG?
Thanks to any who answer and read this. I look forward to getting out of work today and getting IG to play. A feeling I have not felt in some time.

Re: A newbs perspective...SoR FEELS like AC
Packers - 110k or so through 500k or so per packer, depending on what level it is (higher = more expensive).
Mounts - around 500k
Apts - 1 million
How long it'll take you to purchase it depends on your playing habits. I have been playing for about 6 weeks and have 3 packers and over 1 million (so, enough to have an apt, though I haven't gotten one yet).
Finding a guild - I had an easy time of it. Within 2 days of hitting the mainland I was in a guild that fit my play style. It's fairly easy to get into a guild.
Cost - you own the client already. No further cost to get that. You just have to pay the subs fee, which in the US is $15/mo.

The level of lore knowledge you want to take in is totally up to you. You are a refugee that has found your way back to civilization, that is all you really need to know. I had much more problem roleplaying a veryveryvery old druid in WoW, cause I was expected to know about this or that dragon or liche.
I'm sure you'll find a good guild within a day or two, most likely within hours. Activity varies, but I can't think of any guild that isn't both helpful and understanding.
Edit: And we don't say newbs here, we call them refugees. Well, except Lexius

As one who played AC for 6 years I feel I am qualified to comment on your observation. I must say I don't agree. AC is very quest-oriented and rich in loot. There are numerous dungeon environments in AC which SoR doesn't have, and lore plays a large part as well. Crafting in AC was very much an afterthought and SoR's crafting was implemented from the beginning and is better integrated. If anything, SoR resembles Horizons; very similar look and gameplay.senej wrote:After playing for the past two days this game to me feels like Asherons Call, my first MMORPG and a classic first gen game.

As a veteran player of Horizons, I'll agree with that observation. The most striking similarity is both MMOs having a deep crafting system. Because HZ offers unlimited multiclassing, you can in time master all trades there, just like you can advance to max skills in Ryzom. And of course, both games have a very helpful, friendly and mature community (the average age of HZ players is over 30).xmojo wrote:If anything, SoR resembles Horizons; very similar look and gameplay.
Re: A newbs perspective...SoR FEELS like AC
Agreed much, that is why I stated it FEELS like AC. It is more feeling than actual gameplay. I am finding myself feeling the same emotions and thinking along the lines I used to in AC. This is a very nice thing and something I have not felt about an MMO since. Not WoW not SWG not COH/V.xmojo wrote:As one who played AC for 6 years I feel I am qualified to comment on your observation. I must say I don't agree. AC is very quest-oriented and rich in loot. The differences are what are drawing me into SoR day by day. I am really liking the crafting and the fact I can spend time just crafting and searching creatures, foraging for mats, I dont feel stuck in a certain manner of playing. Last night I just went exploring around the refugee island taking in the sounds and sights. I have not done something like that since I decided to explore outside of Holtburg.

Re: A newbs perspective...SoR FEELS like AC
I used to love running between the towns rather than take the portals. As a low-level character there was no greater danger or excitement than to move between towns without ending up at a lifestone as a result of an unfortunate encounter with a phyntos wasp, reedshark or shreth. In the early days of AC road travel was common and you'd always meet fellow travellers along the journey (usually with a mob of monsters following in their wake!)senej wrote:Last night I just went exploring around the refugee island taking in the sounds and sights. Re: A newbs perspective...SoR FEELS like AC
Yay fellow AC players! I have to agree with Senej, this game reminds me of AC more than any other (I played over 5 years). THE Primary reasy is because of the complexity and wonder that the game has. I've been playing a few hours and still feel like a complete newb, like I did in AC. Subsequent MMO's to come out after AC were too simple, I understood everything I would really need to in the first night or two of playing them, and there was nothing special about them. The other BIG resemblenc is the FREEDOM! In AC you could roll a 100 Willpower/Focus/Coordination Swordsman if you wanted! You could do ANYTHING, this is the first game that has really allowed TRUE freedom even close to AC. In almost all games after AC1/EQ/AO etc you had to choose your role, and thats what you were basically stuck with on that character(you might get multiple roles) but never could you do ANYTHING.
So far i'm still very lost, and very confused....but that makes me appreciate this game more than any of the others. It took two years, With XP Chains and Macros to get the first 126 (Max at the time), I hope this game is just as challenging for everyone BTW Do you any of you remember someone at 126 before 2 years into the game? The first 126 on our server happened after the expansion
