This is not ment to be a negative post. I've seen a couple of posts about people with more than a year of SoR leaving.
For myself the longest MMO I've played is Planetside for 18 months and I played WoW for 13 months. For myself, burnout is the reason. Planetside, I got tired of attacking the same bases over and over. For WoW, the end game was not my cup of tea (non-stop large party raids and/or Battle Grounds). In fact my first WoW character hit 60 after 4 months of game play. The only reason I eeked out 13 months was by starting 6 alts and alternating through them. I think it's a testament to WoW's great environment that I could stand to run multiple characters though mostly the same quests 2-4 times. Any who...
So I assume burnout is an issue for all MMOs. If your nearing the end of your SoR experience and can post a calm, obective, informative post, I'd like to hear it. If your considering MMO alternatives, feel free to say why you think another MMO deserves a shot. Don't misinterpret. I'm having fun in SoR and looking forward to migrating to the mainland.
If you think SoR is the greatest, I don't mind hearing about that either.
Please no trolling or flames. If this has all ready been discussed multiple times, or you find this subject annoying, please ignore this post!

Re: Why do players leave SoR?
People leave for different reasons - some are personal reasons and some are game-related. Every game cannot please everyone and certainly once you reach a point of feeling like you've experienced it all there is a sense of burn-out.
I think the more important question is why people stay. I, personally, have been in Ryzom since March 2004. I take occasional breaks...only once with the intention of not returning. At that time I was disappointed with the direction Ryzom was taking. I wasn't prepared for the Kami-Karavan battle. In the end, I returned with a fresh attitude and a different perspective ... learned that I could PvP without making it personal and started having fun again.
During my break, I quickly found out that Ryzom is far more than a game to me. From the very start, the community has been the major draw for me. Some people I've met have translated into real life friends. I keep logging in because I love spending time with these people.
Beyond the people, the game is visually stimulating. It's challenging. It offers such variety. The support staff is better than I've experienced elsewhere.
I continue to look for the next "Ryzom experience" but fail to be satisfied with any other game and find myself returning home.

Re: Why do players leave SoR?
my leaving game post from Feb just in case you were interested.
Why did I leave (and perhaps more importantly, why did I come back?)? my leaving Atys was a combination of frustration and burn out. Grinding my levels was fun to do because of the guild I was in. We joked around, made the long 230+ levels into something fun (like seeing how many plods we could take at once or standing in the kincher spawn). but the hunt became somewhat pointless for me. After mastering ele, pike and DA, I'd met my goals (besides PR and HA craft, but those aren't hunt related). I started new projects such as Master of Magic or Master of 2hand combat, but lost motivation for it since there is no reason to grind more than one melee tree to 250 (other than the title). As a guild we killed every boss, we trekked to every city, we hunted, we dug, we pvp'd. But even with that whole buffet of fun, it still grows old after a while... and that leads me to the frustration part
development of this game is.... extremely slow (to put it nicely). This is made even worse by the potential this game has. I think that SoR could easily be the best MMO out there... it just needs to get its butt in gear. To give you an idea of what i mean: there was a bug in game called the Map Bug (it displayed your team mates in locations that they weren't. You'd trek over to them and they'd actually be 100s of meters away). It was recognized as a bug and talked about a lot on the forums. It took over 1.5 years to fix it. The giant list of changes that occured during the patch that introduced RoS was a giant list of bugs and fixes that had been talked about just as long as the map bug. After 2 years of people asking for high end content (you hit 250 and theres nothing to do besides the rare OP battle. You can grind a new skill, but after a few of those, you're not seeing any return on that grinding save the new titles), Nevrax has only just released 'plans' to make a high level area. Now, they've only just started talking about it, so god knows how long it'll take to get in game (another 1.5 years maybe?).
I realize it might seem like I hate the game or that I think its a failure, but I don't. Not yet, at least. This game has MASSIVE potential... its just not being tapped enough. The game has so much story, a great combat system, the much-talked-about-rarely-used RAID system, etc etc etc.... the list goes on and on. The potential for events (they give us a big one every 6+ months or so) is huge. The combat system is great. The skill based system is even better... but its not being used to its true potential. and that is one of the many reasons that people leave the game. No high end stuff. I remember an Atys that was packed of players of all levels (When Thesos actually used to have people in it!). A /who in any region came up with at least 20 names. But even then, there were complaints of nothing to do with the levels they earned. Now, years later, the regions grow more and more empty (even Dyron is much more empty than when I left it in Feb). The intro of OPs and global PvP pushed others away (another shining example of development speed... OPs and PvP were supposed to be part of the release... yet, 1.5 years later, they arrived). anyway, better stop my ranting there....
as for me coming back, I came back for two things. Digging and crafting. Thats right. The thing I complained about the most (hasn't everyone from time to time?) yet it brought me back to the game. However, it wasn't enough for me to limit myself to just Ryzom (or rule out leaving for another game). I'm currently playing SWG (with the rest of Infinity) and come back to SoR in the slow moments to do a bit of digging or crafting (I attempted to hunt and make Ryzom more of main game, but no one hunts any more and theres no real reason to keep grinding, so... meh). Anyway, thats why I left game. Frustration (due to lack of content, bugs, slow development, etc) and burn out (any game that remains the same becomes boring... if it didn't, then we'd still all be playing Pong).

Re: Why do players leave SoR?
One on the reason's I keep leaving for awhile is since they refuse to give us new stuff ever. like R2 that was suppose to be released last year, along w/ they never do event's, the last big event they did was 1 year ago and that was Chapter 2 of the PvP thing, only thing of that I foudn was fun was digging or crafting for karavan fame points.

Thanks all. I appreciate the opinions. I'm looking at one other MMO and that is not due until 07 so I'll have plenty of time to get sucked into SoR. I really do like its exotic nature.

Re: Why do players leave SoR?
Me leaving... Is because I found myself getting frustrated with the out post and factions crap... I got tired of listening to people argue and whine about it when all they were doing was making it worse for the rest of us who were in the same situation... Then I caught myself starting to whine with them O.o so I decided it was time to take a step back...
#1-I was getting frustrated instead of having fun.
#2- I am tired of grinding for nothing (once you have 1 250 melee you dont get anything for the rest[edit]-which btw I find REALLY stupid.[/edit]). And I hate digging and don't like to craft because I have to dig to craft so....
Anyway... I stick around the Forums(and keep my account open) still because I still love this game even if there are some whiny peeps around ... There is another MMO I am waiting on tho ... So no telling if I will be back in Ryzom for a long time to come... (if ever).
[edit](P.S.) This is not meant as a flame at all I noticed as I re-read it... that it seems sorta harsh ... But I know alot of people will understand exactly what I am talking about.

They're still working on R².sc30002 wrote:One on the reason's I keep leaving for awhile is since they refuse to give us new stuff ever. like R2 that was suppose to be released last year, along w/ they never do event's, the last big event they did was 1 year ago and that was Chapter 2 of the PvP thing, only thing of that I foudn was fun was digging or crafting for karavan fame points.

There was a big event yesterday.
As for me...there's nothing in the game that would make me leave. I can't get tired of the grind because I simply don't grind. I can't feel like I've experienced everything there is, because even after fourteen months I learn and see new things every day. The only way I'd leave is if I burned out for inexplicable psychological reasons.

Re: Why do players leave SoR?
i thnik that morgaine explained the reason who most of us players left...i came back now after a few mmos...they are crap if you look at what you get here, but this is also to frustrating since when you got it all...your done. R2? crap...its content made by players, sounds cool but you cant do anything with it in the real game and it doesnt bring content for players who just want the real game and not RP fun etc.
So yea im now ingame but mostly on an alt i made since my main, Nookie, is kami and kami is dead! No point fighting since ive tried to put structure in it and i failed(was it my fault or the rest of the funky kamis? i guess some ppl get my point here) and ill prob be leaving game very soon again since there is no point of my being here.
For new ppl this can be the best game ever, for old players we are done here and need to move on.
