My advice is to take the mage, forage and craft packs. You can make a knife and start meleeing with no costs. If you have to later start any of the 3 major areas, it will cost you 50 skill points.
Re: Need "mage" help
Thank You Riveit. Confused on a couple more things, was wondering what i should like have my stats should be once I leave the starting island and what ratio should I keep my stats at to be an effective mage?. Also what spells are "needed" and what spells should I stear clear from?

Re: Need "mage" help
I'm pretty sure the magic starter pack gives you Acid 1, which is a damage spell. You can use this to kill a few yubos or something around the starter town on the starter island, and then as your skill increases you will be able to buy bigger and better spells. It is recommended that you reach level 20 in at least one combat skill before you reach the mainland, but I think better advice is to stay on the starter island until you feel comfortable with the game. Once you can control your character, successfully kill things and loot them, talk to NPCs, avoid nasty predators (a phenomenally useful skill) and generally get around the interface, you should be fine on the mainland. There are still critters low enough on the mainland to kill at even level 1, so that shouldn't be a problem for you. There are many more people on the mainland, so you will find help and teams a lot easier to come by, and as soon as you are comfortable, pop over, it will make the beginning much easier (it is a tough game when you've just started!)
As to what you should do to make a good 'mage' character, I would say work on your offensive (elemental, damage) and healing almost equally up until around level 150. A good healer is an ever valuable asset to any team, and at 150 you can heal very effectively. Also, don't neglect melee, as it gives lots of extra hitpoints which can be vital for survival. I neglected my melee for too long, and I regret that, although I have now raised that skill much more and the benefits are very noticeable. Get a good set of Magic Amplifiers and some Hitpoint bonus Light Armour (just check the merchants, there should be some on there) and you should be all set to destory all kinds of Atysian nasties!
As a lot of people will probably say in later replies to this thread, this is one of the best and most helpful communities out there, so just ask in Region chat if you need help, or send me a PM by typing "/tell Nillian [message]" and I will be glad to help you out.
Lastly, enjoy your stay here, and don't hesitate to post the custard out of the forums, we are all here to help!

Re: Need "mage" help
first chance you get, buy a decent set of magic amps.. you do more damage punching yubos with your starter amps than casting with them
Decent amps would have at least 50 % elemental power and speed, dont worry about afflictions yet, and while healing is one of the most in-demand skills in the game, you might be able to get by without casting any for the first 21 levels.
If you are fortunate enough to have people near your level you can team with, by all means work on healing, in fact, if you team up without being able to heal you are a liability to your teammates.
Your starting spell, Acid, is good against most animals you will meet, and you can concentrate on increasing its power at first. Shortly you will run into things immune to it tho, and will need other types of damage to deal with them. That information is readily available so I wont include it here yet

Thank you guys for all your help.
Re: Need "mage" help
Hey guys, I have a related question - I'm a newbie too and I started with Fighting/Harvest/Craft. Then I spent 50 Harvest points on Magic - if I had started Magic/Harvest/Craft I wouldnt have had to pay 50 skill points to start melee? I am a bit bummed now because my Harvest skills really aren't up to par but I did want magic - finding out I just wasted those points because of a poorly-made character and unequal starting points is a fairly large bummer.
Re: Need "mage" help
*Hugs* I did that too. But don't worry! It doesn't take long to recover those skills points. Soon you will have more magic and melee points than you know what to do with.sapling wrote:I wouldnt have had to pay 50 skill points to start melee? I found the forage and craft skill points much harder to come by at the early levels, but that might be because I enjoyed hunting more.
Re: Need "mage" help
I have found magic to be harder to lvl than fighting. The only magic spells i have spent money on is self heal 1, acid damage 2, and cold 1. I am thinkign about the one that lest me heal others should i get it?
