Downloading Ryzom for free trial.

Post by karkus »

Hi, I'm downloading Ryzom for the trial and I'm really looking forward to it! Just to get me started can anyone tell me a few pros and cons of the game?

Welcome. :D

Pro: Unique story, setting, races, style, etc.

Con: Doubleclick-on-target-and-go-get-a-sandwich style melee combat.

Pro: Beautiful graphics; textures, characters, models, animations, effects, landscapes, etc.

Pro: Complex and interesting crafting system that has more to do with a player's personal knowledge, experimentation, experience, etc. than their levels.

Con: Not enough storage options/space. Even though we can have three packers (500 bulk each), a mount (100 bulk), an apartment (1000), and of course our bag (300), it's still not enough for some.

Pro: Many SWG refugees have likened Ryzom to pre-CU/NGE Star Wars Galaxies.

Con: Some little tiny annoyances, like being unable to hide the target reticle (which can be annoying when you're trying to record videos). To be honest though, I can't think of any other annoyances.

Pro: Deep, evolving story. Support for roleplaying. Story is advanced through live events.

Pro: Mounts. Mounts are fun, IMO. :p

Pro: Plenty of treats for one who loves to explore. There are many interesting and beautiful places awaiting discovery.

Pro: Small but very friendly and helpful community. :)

Pro: The upcoming Ryzom Ring expansion.

Regardless of what you want to specialize in, when you create your character, pick one each of harvest, magic, and craft starter skill packs. It's the most economical mix and lets you jump right in and try everything. Can get fight points just by punching yubos :)

Welcome to Atys! Look forward to meeting you :D

If you haven't made a few Magic levels before trying this, and maybe upgraded your HP, you'll likely end up on your bum :) But don't be discouraged, at early levels death penalties are often cleared with just one, maybe two actions.

Yeah, although wandering off to get a sandwich or make coffee, you may come back to find your team down and screaming for a rezz because you lost the critter's attention and ended up swinging at the air :)

Melee can be much more involving if you want it to be; switching weapons, using After... credits, adjusting your Aim, but the practical rewards are generally low, or negligible when you're in a team. If only the Aim stanza made your critical chances more like 1 in 4, and its action cost was reduced to the level of Ignore Armour or even less, then we would have a really involving melee skill. It would become worthwhile learning the effects of criticals and fighters would strive to disable their targets with successive criticals possibly accumulating.

I agree with jamela, Melee´s not al gotgetsandwichcombat.
Its only that way if you want it to be and just hit the cue Action button.
If you want to you can make Melee very interesting, you´ve just got o come up with the nerve for it. ;)

Welcome to Atys and enjoy your stay.

If yer a real fanaticus and a lone wolf, throw yerself into Foraging and Crafting. The most complicated profs to learn, but well worth it, and being able to make shiny armors and weapons to sell, is very very rewarding. Enable yer mp3 player, put on some chill music, and forage "all níght loohoong!"
