Hello All,
Figure it was about time I posted in here to say hello...
I have been playing Ryzom for two weeks so far, the community has been terrific. My knowledge of Ryzom is slowly growing, some things are making a lot more sense, others are still a mystery and Gingos are still something to be cautious of!
I have been steadily levelling my skills so I can venture further out from the starting village and explore, so far I am level 50 melee, level 30(ish) in magic, level 5 mining and level 1 crafting!
Would be gratefull if someone could give me pointers on the following questions :-
1. I have seen a clip of a player dual wielding what I assume were dagggers, is the 1h route the correct tree to take to achieve this?
2. Is there a downside to dual wielding ?
3. Has anyone made video of the different fighting styles (1h/2h etc.) or more information of the differences of the forms of combat ?
I really liked playing healer+tank in my previous mmo. From what I can see of the way Ryzoms armour works you need to play one of these two strengths at a time....
4. Are all the melee trees equally good at tanking ?
5. Am I correct in understanding that Defensive Affliction is the buffing style class to reduce damage taken and Healing Magic is more focused on healing damage recieved ?
Thanks

First up, since you can pretty much do "anything", there are no classes per se, but I'll guess you were just using those phrases for ease
1) Dual wielding can only be done for 2x daggers, or 1x dagger and 1x 1h sword - the first is under the "Close Combat" tree, and the second gets you both Close Combat and 1h xp (split between the dagger and sword).
2) Downside for CC is that it does much less damage There are debateable upsides (keeps aggro very well, interrupts a lotin PvP) but I haven't used it enough to comment.
3) Hehe, not as far as I know.. the main differences are in the weapon stats (2h sword is the "standard" with axes and maces doing more damage but hitting slower, pikes hitting faster but doing less damage) and the special stanzas you can add to your attacks (bleed, slow, ignore armour).
4) Yep, healing in HA (heavy armour) is a bad thing While we use the term "tank" quite a bit... I'm not so sure there is such a thing as the classic tank in SoR (holds aggro, absorbs lots of damage, doesn't do much damage); I think most meleers focus on killing the mob asap and let the healers worry about keeping them alive But basically all melee trees are equally good at "tanking" in that its only your armour and your level that determines how much damage you will absorb/dodge/parry.
5) As for buffing, there is no real "buff" skill tree - Defensive affliction basically is where you cast a spell that affects the mob in such a way that stops it attacking (either sleep, stun or fear... fear makes it run away, and sleep/stun are very similar). Offensive affliction on the other hand actually affects the mob in a way that either hurts it or makes it hurt you less somehow (root 'roots it to the spot', slow attack/movement make it attack/move slower, blind makes it less accurate in hitting you, madness makes it attack itself instead of you)
(PS. the effects of the affs mentioned here are the effects on mobs... some of them do something different to homins in PvP )

duel weilding is 2 trees, so that in its self is a down side, daggers and 1handed sword are different trees which both will need lvling.
Erm not sure if anyone has a video of it, but as a master of both 1handed and 2 handed i can sum up the main points
2 handed hits for alot more than 1handed at the same lvl, but 1handed hits alot faster it evens its self out i guess, but 1handed is faster so stamina consumtion is higher...
I like 1handed alot, but it was one hell of alot harder to bring to lvl 250 than axe or sword, as a starting tree taking on 1handed and daggers is alot, but if its something you wanna do stick at it!
Ryzom armor is split into 3 groups, light, medium, heavy, light has no penalty for actions so spells or melee actions will take less stamina/sap/HP depending on what your doing, medium is a nice inbetween solution which i am slowly comming around to the idea of using, you have a higher protection than light armor and a HP boost but have some (not alot) action penalty, its nice for 1handed, ranged, or switching between magic and melee heavy is well, heavy, alot of action penalty but alot of protection and alot of HP boost, mainly used by meleers, or the odd boss with amps on (not really usful till higher lvls)
Melee trees are all good for tanking, but dont know if u noticedm parry is contected to lvl of you melee and dodge and other tree, the highest the parry the more likly you are not to be hit, 1handed have sheilds which have a masive parry boost so i guess all melee is good for tanking, but 1handed + sheild especially
Defencive affliction (DA) isnt really that defencive, the genral idea of it is to control the mob/person by using different spells, some freeze them still (stun/sleep) some make them able to move but unable to cast (fear) its a great skill to take up and is very popular now.
if you want to know anything else or if i didnt cover everything ask again, people are fairly good on forums
send me a tell ingame if you want to chat or have anymore questions
enjoy ryzom

Hi there Kusen ... you did take your time indeed. But I'm not quite sure the "artist" of your signature applies ... by now you should be an expert no ?
