Yes that's what I meant. Recruiting then has to involve some contact at the very least.
Given that any new recruit requires abot 50 cats and 2 millions dappers in their first week, recruiting anyone is just plain stupid.
I enjoy helping new players and do it often... but I invite only a few to join our guild. And I only do it after a few hours of hunting together, chatting, watching for "bad" signs like l33t language and rudeness.
I don't believe we need to change anything in the newbie recruiting mechanism. Anyone recruiting blindly will most often get garbage. Or spies.

I recruit for the Order because I enjoy the guild, and there could be others out there who would enjoy it as much as I have. But I'm picky; I only recruit roleplayers. I usually talk to a new player for several hours or days first. Sometimes I tell them about the other RP guilds in case one of them would suit them better. I'm happy if they end up in a guild that's right for them, even if it's not the Order.

I voted "no" because I believe new players should not have limited options. I think we can somewhat "safely" say that most players that are attracted to Ryzom are adult (in age anyway *wink*) and are not apt to jump into the first guild that invites them the second they step off Newbie Island....unless they choose to do so (for instant comraderie, for stuff, or any other reason).
I think the responsibility lies with the guilds themselves. For example, my guild is still pretty small and we have discussed New Player recruitment. We have two players that are very new to the game, and at this time we feel that is all we are prepared to devote our time to. We want to be available if they need help, we want to be able to provide them with gear, we want to have *time* to make them feel they are part of our family...and not just a number to our guild growth list. We want them to know they are in our guild because they were *chosen*, specifically, and not just recruited so we could have a bigger guild. In short, we have evaluated our ability to give a new player the attention they deserve, while still having time to have fun doing things at "our" higher levels.
This is *not* saying anything against those guilds that *seem* to indiscriminately recruit anything on two legs with no guild tag. As long as the guild has the time and resources to "take care" of their new members, then who are we to judge?

Yep, that's an inportant thing imho.. Iknow there are guilds that even have RP or ritual recruitment missions, a thing which is to admire, not only for what stands to RP but also as a nice "filtering" want-it-easy-players.

In a game I used to play, a guild could invite a member only if the recruiting member was in the same zone. Perhaps something like that would be good to do here? I think the guild invites should be kept off of the noob islands, although recruiting can go on, in terms of alts meeting noobs and getting to know them, telling them about their great guild on the mainland, etc... Once off the island, though, I think they should be free to join whomever they like.
*shrugs* So much of this is on the shoulders of the noob, though. Caveat emptor, I believe, is Latin for 'let the buyer beware'. With choice comes responsibility, right?

But seriously; Bies, you and I both know it is perfectly posible to have a full and fun game experience without guilding. If you don wanna join, just say "no". I did, repeatedly, to several different guilds, and when I did say yes, it was because you guys had already become my (Ffion's) friends (apologies at this point to all the people in other guilds who have also become Ffi's friends). But I agree your point to some extent - newbies should be encouraged to get to know the ppl in a guild before joining - HOW to encourage them to do this is a harder on. But I don't believe they should be prevented from joining by changing game rules. Like someine said earlier that's restricting a player's freedom of choice, however mis-, un- or partially-informed that choice might be. I don't regret Kovacs joining the SCoG straight off the boat, but I did want to try and play another way too - hence Ffionnys. And another 3 alts should I want them - 5 chances to get it right. Or: 5 completelt different alts should you so chose!
