Alternative network solution to fix please wait, Windows Zero Configuration (WZC)

Post by crawfish »

So i've had some problems with the Please Wait message ever since day 1 of playing SoR. Put in a ticket and got a fast response, hell fastest I've seen in any mmo game.

But, all the solutions offered by the GM's did not help. Got a lot of turn down my graphics card settings etc etc. Fixing these issues isn't the easiest thing in the world and I realize that. I would almost compare it to a mechanic telling a customer how to fix his car over the phone blind folded and hands behind his back.

Ok ok so anyway I find out that every time I get a "Please Wait" message I can get rid of it within 0 to 2 seconds by doing a tracert 213.208.119.98 in a command prompt. I've done this about 10 times now to get rid of the Please Wait message, normally if i sit and do nothing it takes 30-60 seconds (usually at which time I'm dead from a mob or gas cloud yayyyy).

Before this discovery I would go a whole day w/o seeing the message, then some days i get them once an hour, 3 times an hour, etc...very random.

I am wondering if it is perhaps my wireless adapter that is falling asleep or a port is closing due to inactivity. Also seems fishy when all party members get this message at the same time and die lol.

I checked for any power saving features on the adapter, none were turned on. I have opened all the suggested ports on my windows firewall, i have disabled virus scans of my SoR folder (even tried turning off my software firewall/virus scanner..... didn't matter still got messages). And I have done a static port forward for the 47851 port from my router to my pc. If that's not the right port # im too lazy to look it up now, i did a cut/paste from the networking guide in this forum.

Plugging my pc directly to my router is not an option. I have to stay wireless.

Any suggestions other then graphics tweaks (yes I did try it for a day, no dice) or different video drivers (yes I tried that too, no dice)?

********** Edited Info ***********

Win XP sp2 (build 2600)
Intel P4 2.8GHz
1 Gig ram
Nvidia GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP 8X (video driver 71.89)
Netgear router/wireless adapter
DSL internet connection

Please Wait are random, not repeatable on my behalf through any actions in game or cities I visit. Seem to not get them when I'm doing "treks" though, I assume because data is being uploaded/downloaded at a rapid rate.

I also assume this to not be a video issue being a tracert should not break that lockup. The lockup remains while I alt tab to my cmd box and goes away when I press enter to do the tracert.

I have turned off a 'power management' feature found on the adapter through the windows device manager and haven't had a please wait yet (5 hrs). I don't want to get excited yet so will continue to test it for the night and will post my findings.

The above ended up not working ;/ Had my hopes up. I got 7-10 please wait messages throughout today, everyone one was ended by my tracert jigger rig when I alt tabbed and executed the cmd line.

Enough testing for today, will try something else tomorrow.

specs?

some things that cause regular pls waits

low system ram/gfx ram
slow/dodgy connection
slow cpu
router issues
etc ;)

the non router ones are exacerbated by higher gfx settings - do you have more trouble in high stress areas? see Zora for prime example :)

you say you can't go wired.. not even with a really long cable?

If your router has the ability to log what it does check the logs for the port ryzom uses and see what it does. It might drop the packets or flags them as hostile/unwanted/requested for some reason. Since UDP does not have sessions as TCP has the software might get confused about the traffic it is recieving.

Some people find that "Please Wait" issues are mainly caused by their router/firewall closing connections or something; this is often remedied by forcing the game to re-synch with the server by opening the ingame mp3 player or changing the far-clip settings or something similar :)

Today I disabled the Wireless Zero Configuration service in Win XP (control panel/administrative tools/services). Found an old post where Zerlin suggested to turn this service off (stop service, then set to manual) to someone having some network issues witn Win XP. Btw I don't think you can do this if you don't have a 3rd party application control your wireless networking (I use Netgear's tool for example that is in my system tray). It will work while your computer is on but soon as you restart, if I remember correctly, your wireless network adapter won't work properly if windows xp controls your wireless configuration (logging onto a network).

I also read if you need to change networks later, you may need to turn the service back on temporarily. Not too many ppl change networks often unless on a laptop though.

So anyhow, I haven't had any please waits all day today, restarted the client 2 or 3 times to assure it wasn't just a "good connection" to the game server. People from WoW may know what I'm talking about.

Gonna test further into the weekend and hope I didn't just get another "lucky" day and be bombarded tomorrow 10 fold with messages.

Yay fixed my problem of "please wait". 2 days (roughly 10-15 playing hours) without a single message.

Anyhow is is a link to Zerlin's suggestion of disabling the WZC service which I did.

http://www.ryzom.de/forum/showthread.php?t=14921

And a link that goes into the problem a little more into detail and some possible solutions.

Please note that I do not have a Linksys router, in fact I have a Netgear router and the solution still worked.

No more please wait deaths!
