Well hey, I'm under 18 and I find that my posts are usually lacking in the abbreviation. IMHO *gasp* Actually, I think most of my post get some sort of point across, and are usually not rude.

In game I pretty much have to use tons of shorthand (or would that be short-typage?), because I do not have the ability to use any voice chats while playing the game, and while killing, short-typage is a must.

My excuse for the forums, is mostly because I check the forums while in game :) And there is also the fact that I could care less if other people find my posts to be lazy-like. If you do not want to read a post with shorthand...guess what, dont read it! Who'd have thought of that?

I usually end up skimming posts anyway because I do not have the time to waste typing up an extra long post with no abbreviations. I DO have a life. (As amazing as that sounds to some).

Catch you in game, TTFN!

With regard to the use of abbreviations I cannot say I am not guilty of the use of some abbreviations, I think its a fact of life now and somthing that we should tolerate at least in general text conversation although it doesnt really fit in an RP context.
However I do sympathise that full on leetspeak is not somthing that I think many of us would want to see proliferate these boards.

One other issue with regard to forum etiquette though, I do wish people would include the name of their main "toon" :) in their sig.

Some may wish postings to be anonymous but If there was an idea who the character was then some of the postings that may be more inflamatory may not create such strong reaction if people had an idea who was writing it and therefore the standpoint from which it was written.

i don't see anything wrong with abbreviating words, especially ingame. If i am trying to get a sentence out inbetween a dig cycle or healing then there is no time to use 'proper' english. tbh though i dont really have a problem with abbreviating whatever you can - its just efficent :_)

too right, it should be enforced. Generally the only reason ppl want to remain incognito is so they can rant away with no fear that others will form an opinion of them ingame, thats just really cowardly imo.

Unlike many people, I consider my forum persona to be a separate 'toon' to my ingame one. The "game" options available to them are far more diferent than those between Zorais and Trykers for example, and thus require a completely diferent style of play. There is inevitably some crossover, but on the whole, I would rather people didnt confuse one with the other.

thus, no sig :)

I agree with the initial point made - shorthand in forums is annoying.
In game's a different matter, of course, as I'm sure lots of us have had to end up typing "Argh, I died - blasted chat" or something similar, when we spent too long typing to friends. So the short words do help.

But in the forum, do you have the same problem? I mean, if you have a dog in your room that tries to bite your leg off if you type for too long at a time, then I'll be happy to send the people from the pound around. Oh yeah, I'll forgive abbreviations too. :)

One plus point about using the correct words is that non-native english speakers have more of a chance. Why confuse them more than our language does anyway?

Really, there is no reasonable excuse for it. To those that say the new l33t-spk (or whatever it is classed as) is due to text messaging, and think that is a good enough reason to use it with a qwerty keyboard, need I remind you that most phones nowadays have predictive text, which means the correct spelling is just as quick and easy.
Oh, and people used to need shorthand in telegrams, but it wasn't used as an excuse to forget how to spell.

Use your shorthand if you must. But don't blame me if you get treated like an ignorant little kid.

OOC: I don't know man... you can be IC and OOC easy enough... the way I play IG does not represent how I feel on many topics. Those that know me IG, do not confuse me in the forums for this reason. By playing how you play IG, you represent yourself there... what we speak of and for here makes us a person and nobody should be confusing the two really.

I think you weaken your forums message when your not backing it up with how your playing. I am hardly a warmonger, but IG serve Jena categorically... When a vote comes up I vote the way I prefer to play the game.

Not to dis you at all, but it does appear a bit shady if you have an opinion on everything... but don't want anyone to know who you "play". You can vote, chime in, and speak of anything you like as a person... we all do. Why hide how your playing unless you fear distrust, revenge or other things. If I worried about that I would never post here...

You'd be boosting your forums weight by being someone we know... whether good, bad or ugly... I am 2 of 3 on that and have a great time playing and being myself and DT.

Personally, I picked an account name out before I even thought about a character name, and if I thought I could change the account name to match, I'd try ... failing that, I'd rather not have the two names be thought of together.
