That, to me is one of the most significant points. Excessive and inappropriate use of bad language is a sign of immaturity, and the more someone swears, in a game where every single letter has to be deliberately typed, the more I think of someone pretending to be an adult - but they dont know how..
I have done the odd "wtf?!" when provoked, and if you are going to rant, swearing is almost a requirement (/tar rushin), but for normal conversation its a waste of time, and doesnt particularly add to the communication.

Between the references to a lack of vocabulary and the relative immaturity of some players (note AGE has nothing to do with it), I am reminded of something my father and grand-father taught me: Swearing and Cursing are not the same thing, and neither has to use profanity.

Avoiding the arguments of "what's profane?", I am reminded of a curse attributed to Arabic Camel Drivers (but probably originating in Hollywood) "May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your genitals!" (said with a Smile, of course!) Or more directly "Eat Blade, Yelk Breath!".
Swearing is SUPPOSED to be an affirmation, as in "I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nuttin' but the truth, so help me Ma-Duk!" or "I Swear by my dead Mother's left nostril that if you try to trick me into dancing nude again I'm going to cut out your spleen and feed it to the Gingos!" (BTW, I heard that one, or something similar, in the Tranquil Tryker one "night"! Just ask Zahan and Nightblade! :p )

Samar made some great points .. dont ever try to trick a certain Trykerrette (with beutiful eyes) into dancing nude at a pub night :D

there are other ways to let out one's emotions besides swearing .. just ask Mio!

*forages for spleen* its here somewhere...

That is true, and I don't think people have many illusions there. Even so (leaving aside the issue of whether it's right or wrong for a moment), being exposed to older people who are using the same sort of language will hardly demonstrate any necessity for ever learning another way of expressing themselves.

I think use of lang can be several reason - in real life.

I would say that up-bringing has a fair bit to do it with, if you are brought up in an enviroment where swearing is taboo, then you will continue to view it as that,

Whereas if you are brought up in an enviroment wher "everyone" swears, for all sorts of reasons, then you wont think twice about swearing in public.

I do NOT belive that swearing (IMO) is a sign of immautrity - but used for lack of a better word. using the example of "F them F them F them" that i read in the paper. what else could have been said? "I dont care about them"? it doesnt have the same effect. I think that they way it was used, accurately portrayed her feelings towards the people. In all fairness, Dame Judy Dench isnt exactly immatunre?! :D

But having said that when it comes to game, prehaps the more "immautre" players have slightly less restriant than the old and prehaps more wiser..

Just throwing in some more idea's

Much love and Peace

For me it would have had a greater impact if she'd said something along the lines of "Why should I care what some inept reporter's personal opinions are of me anyway? If they can't be bothered to get their facts straight, then I can't be bothered to spend time discussing them" (not sure what the context of her comments were originally). Putting something like that demonstrates your contempt as well as using curse words. Better, in my opinion, because it demonstrates a thought-out reason why she holds them in contempt, and only draws people to your side, as opposed to alienating them through "bad" language.

That said, I do feel sympathy for Judy. Maybe I'm being charitable, but I don't believe that those were words she would have intended to be broadcast to the nation. I see them as more likely words born of true frustration, purely reactionary. I wonder, if she'd been typing rather than speaking, would she have typed that?

Well put. And for example, if a better word just doesn't exist.

Then you are a far better man than I, because what I see is someone who's calm and collected, not incredibly ticked off.
